A new restaurant could be making its way to Opp in the coming months, officials said Tuesday.

Opp Utilities Board members gave their OK for the Mayor John Bartholomew to offer two acres on the industrial access road between the palm trees and the Best Western to a company, whose name is being withheld at the time, to put a restaurant, and go into a contract with the company.

Bartholomew told the board that there are a lot of moving parts right now, but the establishment was a franchise restaurant and Economic Development President Rick Clifton is helping with the incentives package.

Bartholomew said once the deal for the land, which the utilities board agreed to sell for $3,000 an acre, the incentives packages would have to go through both the city council and the utilities board.

Bartholomew said the company’s finances are “all there.”

And once the contract is in place, they will break ground within 60 days.

Similar restaurants have been built in Enterprise and Crestview.

“We’ve been wanting something to come for a long time,” said Utilities Board member Arlin Davis, who also serves on the city council.

If the contract goes through, Bartholomew said the company would come to next month’s meeting and present a presentation to the utilities.

Bartholomew said they would have to spend money on surveying in order to present a description of the property for the contract.

Bartholomew was unsure of the potential number of employees the company could bring or the estimated tax revenue.

“This the first move of the ball,” Utilities Board member Joe Richburg said.
