Florala preparing for lake season

Florala officials are trying to complete several projects at Lake Jackson before the summer season begins, Mayor Terry Holley said.

City crews are building new bathrooms near the boat landing, he said, and repairs are under way in the RV Park, which has been full most of the winter.

“Some of the snowbirds are preparing to go back now,” he said, “and all of them have already booked a spot for next year.”

There were 19 families in residence in the park through the winter months, he said.

Repairs also are being made to a previously vandalized and closed restroom on the wetlands park side of the lake, and drainage problems are being repaired, Holley said.

Also, he said, a playground will be added at the RV park.

“The merry-go-round is coming back,” he said.

“On Saturday, I went to Opp (to the Rattlesnake Rodeo) and passed out 90 brochures highlighting Cancer Freeze and the 24th of June. I gave one to every arts and crafts vendor and they were interested in the 24th of June because it’s just a one-day event,” he said. “One of them I met was staying in the RV park this week.”

In other business, the council:

  • Appointed Scott Caraway and Jessica Jackson to the Recreation Board.
  • Were told bids for a sidewalk grant project appear to have come in low, but must be reviewed by the state’s engineers before the bid can be officially accepted. The project will build and repair sidewalks on either side of Hwy. 55 leaving town toward Andalusia.
  • Heard a request from James Smith, who plans to open a quick lube business in the old American Legion hall, which he recently bought from the city. Smith is requesting a three-year abatement of two-thirds of the city sales taxes he collects.

The council took no action on this request.
