First Baptist Church-Whatley Street will be holding a special gospel workshop and concert on Sun., June 11, with Anniston’s Derrell Calloway.

Calloway will be performing for the Covington County community and First Baptist members, as well as teaching and directing a gospel workshop for First Baptist members from Thursday until Saturday.

“I am very excited to come to Andalusia and take part in this workshop,” Calloway said. “I’ve never been to Andalusia and I’m looking forward to coming down and meeting people and to be able to share God’s music with others.”

According to choir member Demetrius Scott, this first annual workshop is the brainchild of First Baptist’s Minister of Music Everard Feagin.

“This is something everyone at the church is really, really excited about, and hopefully something we can make a yearly thing,” Scott said.

Calloway, an assistant principal at Weaver High School and minster of music at two different churches in Anniston, is a longtime musician and gospel veteran that will teach a number of techniques like breath control at the church’s workshop. He has been doing music workshops for 20 years.

“The workshop is set up to provide some spiritual growth for the church and we’ll be learning new things about singing as well as different genres of music,” Calloway said.

Scott said that First Baptist members have been anticipating the workshop and concert.

“This is something that is really good for the community and great for the church, and a great experience for everybody involved,” Scott said.

Sunday’s gospel concert will begin at 3 p.m. at FBC-Whatley Street in Andalusia. Admission will be free and is open to the public.
