Citizens speak out

Locals grill U.S. senator on health care, energy

Sen. Sessions spoke to a full house Wednesday.

U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) listened to a dozen speakers express their views on health care, the president, cap-and-trade legislation, the CIA, individual rights and God during a town-hall style meeting billed as a “health care listening forum” in Andalusia on Wednesday.

Approximately 350 people attended the forum, for which there was heavy security.

Sessions opened with comments about Congress, stating first, “We’re spending too much money.”

“The U.S. Congress is not able to take over health care and rewrite it in a few months time,” Sessions said. “It is unimaginable that we would have the brain power to take it over and run it in that period of time.

“The great free-market system we have exceeds anything we’re gonna have (from the government).”

Sessions said he opposed the bailout package approved in the Bush administration last fall, opposed the stimulus package approved when the Obama administration took over, and that he has opposed the president’s energy bill, known as cap-and-trade.

“Basically, it’s a sales tax on energy that will have one certain result,” Sessions said. “It will drive up the price of energy for every American.”

The senator said that when the new administration couldn’t get cap-and-trade passed, it moved on to health care reform.

Congress has stalled the reform movement, he said, and now “American people’s voices are being heard.”

Andalusia resident Harry Hinson asked, “Does anybody in Congress or anywhere else understand that ridiculous bill?”

Hinson said he had read portions of the bills and is concerned that in one bill, it states the Secretary of Health and Human Services will write the rules and regulations “for the bill no one understands.”

He also stated that he believes the bill will provide health care to illegal aliens.

Hinson said, “We need to reform Medicare, we need tort reform, and we need some changes in insurance.”

Sessions said, “About a fourth of the people who are uninsured are here in the country illegally. We need to quit rewarding illegal entry (by allowing health care).”

Dr. Ab St. John of Andalusia introduced himself as a retired physician.

“I’ve been a provider and a receiver of Medicare,” he said. “My wife is a pharmacist.

When I retired, I paid $5,600 a year for Blue Cross Blue Shield for my family. Last year, my costs were $13,000, and I don’t know what they’ll be next year.”

St. John said Washington needs to address the cost of health care “for people like us trying to make health care premiums.”

“Doctors do way too many tests,” he said. “I know. I am one.”

He said many of those costs get passed on to private insurance providers.

“We need a bipartisan or non-partisan committee to look at the true costs in the country, and tell Congress what doesn’t work,” Dr. St. John said, “Until we know the problems, it’s a waste of time to propose bills and it could make the system worse.”

Sessions agreed and said that Congress should, “go back, start over, and get expert opinions.

“This is a really complex matter,” he said. “No (health care) bill should pass that doesn’t have liability reform.”

Sessions said experts estimate 5 to 30 percent of the costs of health care could be saved with liability reform.

One person who had a turn at the mike expressed concern about the “so-called CIA investigations.”

Sessions said that the “good intelligence” provided by the CIA is the “best thing we have to protect this country.”

He said he visited with CIA agents in a Middle East country after 9-11.

“They are targets in that country,” he said. “They are soldiers as much as the soldiers who walk the streets in Afghanistan.”

Another man said he believed there is an “anti-God movement in government. What can we do about that?”

Sessions, a Methodist who often references his Sunday School class, said his teacher recently led a study on the Ten Commandments.

“If you don’t believe in God, you don’t believe in truth, I suppose,” he said.

He added that he believes values help people live a rich and full life.

“Dr. Pierce tells me I can’t fix everything and the Lord’s in charge of that,” he quipped.

Another man expressed concern about Obama’s plan to address school children in a television broadcast this month. The White House says the speech will be about working hard and doing well in school, but critics say that the president will try to get children to encourage their parents to support his agenda.

“Our president has surrounded himself with radicals and on Sept. 8, he’s going in to my children’s schools and address my children,” the man said. “We need to get in his way, and put up a roadblock.”

The senator concluded the meeting by saying that Congress needs to “take time, and start back from square one” on health care.

“What has made me feel best is the spontaneous rising of the American people who know in their gut this is not good,” he said. “If we can’t run the post office, they don’t trust us to run health care.”

Sessions, who previously held a similar session in Huntsville, will hold his final forum in Mobile today, Thurs., Sept. 3, before returning to Washington.

Well done, Michelle.
Sen. Sessions commented this was the largest group of people he'd seen at his many Town Hall's in Alabama!
There would have been more concerned people attending if it had taken place in the evening. But, with the overview by Michelle and the T.V. coverage, those who were at work have a chance 'to be there'.

I firmly believe, we are very fortunate to have Sen. Sessions representing us in Washington.

I saw a psa announcement made by Cortney Cox and someone else today on Fox and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. But the end is what got me. Telling kids to ask what they can do to serve the president. He is surpose to be working for us. That ad was suepose to be pulled because so many parents were outraged by it. If i had a child in school, I would be there Tuesday, if they show that speech here, and find out for myself. It won't do any good to keep your kids home. They will just find out the next day at school what happened. I say watch it with them and discuss it afterwards from your point of view and beliefs. I know a lot have jobs and can't go before any tells me that. That is my opinion

Posted by Shamrock (anonymous) on September 3, 2009 at 1:33 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Kathy: the speech is intended to NOT alert parents or send a RED FLAG. It is what the teachers have to do afterwards, during the school year introducing the real stuff. Talk to your teachers, ask them for a review of what they will be discussing, questioning and promoting with your children.

Is it mandatory for teachers to use this program on our children?
JFK said: Ask not what your COUNTRY can do for you, but ask what you can do for your COUNTRY.

It is trickery to delete Country and write PRESIDENT - aka DICTATOR! That is what children in Communist Russia, North Korea and Red China require of their Youth. It's also called DICTATOR WORSHIP.

Every week that goes by - Homeschooling is looking like a better solution.

The "Pledge" video that is mentioned by kathystephens is not the same as Obama's upcoming speech on 9/8. The video she is referring to is available on YouTube and it is ridiculous. Yes, some celebrities do basically pledge to help Obama. I would be surprised if the pledge video is shown in Andy but not so surprised if the speech is shown in social studies classes. I would absolutely contact teachers to find out if they plan to show the speech. Admin or counselors might not know.

Did you get enough information about the Session's meeting?

I got this email today and wanted to share it with everyone. It would be funny under normal circumstances, but we all know that there has been nothing normal about Obama and his extreme left wing administration. This will be very close to the truth soon, if they aren't stopped.

Ordering a Pizza in 2015

This is absolutely hilarious, but the scary part about it is that it's probably not too far away from being reality, providing Obama has his way with socialized medicine and digitizing medical records. Want to know how to order a pizza in 2015? Click the link and see. Turn up the volume, listen closely and watch the pointer!

I watched the replay coverage today on WSFA of Junior US Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III in Andalusia, Alabama. I got the impression that the good Senator was indeed 'impressed' with good the turnout of citizens and regular folk that attended and will surely 'remember' Andalusia when he does return to Washington, D.C. and know that those folks 'voice' does count and should be remembered in the future. I was very impressed myself of him, and now I know his charisma with an audience and his winning nature. I believe Andalusia may have some apprentice, younger or future polititions that could use him for a 'role' model for their future campaigns and maybe we could have a US Senator from Andalusia next time the office is open for election in 2012 as the Honorable Senator Sessions will be nearing the age of 70. It looked as though Andalusia posed some strong questions and issues and are well informed on National Level issues and are keeping abreast of our rapidly changing times. Andalusia "Stood Tall" throughout WSFA's coverage area throughout the central and southernmost part of the state yesterday, and being replayed on their website nationwide.

I was unable to get a link to work for the "Pledge" video.
Search YouTube for Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher's I Pledge Video.
The video is a little over 4 minutes long.

I have read about the Town Hall meeting. Of course, the liberals (on another thread) are making excuses as to why they didn't attend. They, of course, are the only ones working. What a joke. You'd think with all their smarts and advanced degrees and such that they are the CEOs, company presidents, upper level managers, etc. and could take off work whenever needed.

The pep rally held by Senator Sessions was during working hours (to exclude working people) to a group of retired supporters (average age greater than 65) and thus devoid of any opposition to his view of the world. None of the few young people present were asked for their views and the only minority persons present were for security. Most disappointing was the fact our senator and his supporters opposed everything trying to be accomplished by the new administration but had no alternative solutions to our problems.

1) The goal of the healthcare reform is to make affordable healthcare available to every citizen and reduce the rapid increases in healthcare cost. We pay Sessions and his friends in Washington big bucks to accomplish this. Everyone should remember how well they accomplish the goal. If Sessions has a alternative solution to accomplish this, let us hear it.

2) The goal of the cap in trade bill is to encourage development of power generated from renewable sources and reduce green house gas emissions. If Sessions has a alternative solution to accomplish this, let us hear it.

We elected a conservative senate for 14 years, a conservative house for 12 years and a conservative president for 8 years. During that time they failed to address the social security problem, medical care problem, energy policy, green house gas emissions, and doubled the national debt. Senator Sessions said we need to start addressing the problems by replacing some of our politicians. I suggest two senators from Alabama would be a good start.

People, if you really want to know what the Obama administration is doing to our country, You need to watch Fox News channel and especially Glen Beck and Bill O'Reilly in the afternoon / evening. If you don't get that channel go to foxnews.com.
These guys are the real watch dogs and are not afraid to let the ones that will listen know what's going on behind the scenes. Things that Obama don't want you to know. They explain it so that even an ol country boy like me can understand it.
Just tune in and watch it once and you'll find yourself looking at the clock the next day so you won't miss it.
I'm telling you folks, (and i'm talking to the working class, the lazy ones want everything Obama is pushing) we're headed for real bad times ahead if If Obama and Pelosi get they're way.

Patrick, the social security problem has been relentlessly addressed by conservatives but ends up DOA thanks to the libs.

The energy problem has been addressed over and over...have you ever heard of drilling in Alaska or in other oil rich areas that are off limits? Who do you think kills this...libs. Until other sources of energy surface, oil and coal should continue to be what drives our energy needs.

As far as man-made global warming, that is a theory. You show me 100 scientists who believe it and there are 200 that debunk it. Just because AlGore says its so doesn't make it so. Besides, the latest trends show global cooling. Cap and trade is a scam to get more tax money from the people. How is charging me more for my electricity going to solve a "global warming" problem? If you are happy with paying 30-50 percent more for your power bill, fine, but for me, I think it's too high now.

The conservatives have not been opposed to health care reform, only the one that is currently being proposed (i.e. government take over). There have been many suggestions by conservatives on how to fix our health care problem by eliminating health care to non-citizens, tort reform, opening up state lines to encourage more competition amongst the insurance companies, setting stricter standards on insurance companies for pre-existing conditions, etc.

You can disagree with Sessions or any conservative but don't make unfounded statements that the conservatives have no plan or opinion on how to solve our problems. If you continue to get your information from the MSM, you will continue to be unaware and misled. That is by design.

Cow Bell, go back to feeding cows. The only conservative answer to SSI is give the money to the investment bankers and they will take care of it. No other solution was offered.

About five years ago this paper stated the con servatives energy policy following Senator Shelby's pep rally in Andalusia. Drill! Drill! Drill! Great if you are an oil man.

If you are still debating global warming you need to take a time warp jump. Does your universe still orbit the earth also?

Why are we so interested in keeping multi million dollar health insurance compnies in business? It would save Alabama Power about 3X as much money if the government provided health care than the companies highest estimate of the cost of cap and trade.

I have no fear for the future because I know evently the government will oversee healthcare. The choice for the uninsured is the government step in or they die when they get ill. Those opposing healthcare for the poor are really saying if you don't have money, die! Every other major industrial nation in the world relized this years ago and addressed it.

Like most things in the United States we will create an energy policy whenwe can't afford to operate our vehicles or cool our homes.

SSI will be resolved. Benefits will be cut or our grand children will pay higher taxes.

It is time to move forward to some real solutions to the current problems and not stuck in the 25 year old approaches.

Turn off FOX and get some modern ideas.

Oil and coal is NOT the way we should continue to go, I want anyone who believes we should drill more and dig more to research algae fuels. It will blow your mind how easy and a hell of a lot cheaper to produce and replace gasoline and diesel fuel with little to no emissions into our ozone. The U.S. would never have to drill in our oceans again, or dig another hole for coal if we would we would use algae fuels. You Tube has several videos on this, just type in algae fuel plants... also check out sapphireenergy.com Its amazing what this country could change and improve with algae!!

Patrick, none of the young people were asked for their views? To you young is what? 20 to 40.

Folks, I came in early, sat behind the press chairs, and saw every person who came through the door. Many were 'young' who had obviosuly taken time off - dressed in their work clothes and scrubs, entering the bldg. just in time. A few were young mothers. The majority were from 55 on up, who had a vested interest in Medicare. Everyone was well represented in comments and questions as time permitted.

Most townhalls restrict questions or comments to Healthcare only. Sessions didn't, he answered them all easily and forthright.

What a difference from Cspans townhalls where the progressives show up and immediately they start a ruckus and sway their unoriginal signs in peoples faces.

Patrick, Sen. David Vitter, Dr. John Barrasso, Congressmen Dr. John Fleming, Rodney Alexander, Steve Scalise...they have been working on a 30 page healthcare plan - and have also submitted Amendments to the Obama bill, which have all been voted down by the progressives.

For some reason, you all appear to be very short-sighted and naive. Like the 3 Blind Mice who eventually get whacked, or as Winkie calls it SQUISHED.

Can we trust the Soviets, Chinese and North Koreans to comply with any emission control? or anything else?

Sen. Edward Kennedy R.I.P.was a major sponsor of the 1986 (IRCA) immigration act, that strengthened importation, allowing cheap labor into our country, including the fact he promised--NO MORE AMNESTIES. America has no chance of passing a worthwhile public option for health care, because we will also be paying for illegal aliens along with their families. The bill has no restriction in the wording to authenticate a persons legal status. Personally, I want a single payer system to stop the profiteering by insurance companies, but I don't want to be taxed for underwriting illegal immigrants and their families? Even if they add an amendment declining illegal immigrants from the health care bill, they will still be included if the Democrats enact another path to citizenship?

Then what about the others on the opposite side of our weak fence, they will hear the Amnesty bell chiming and rush for the border, or enter as tourists in an airport. I repeat we cannot even look after our own impoverished and homeless, even many veterans live under bridges. Pandering to foreign nationals legislators have ignored our aging infrastructure, our bridges, roads and tunnels. Call up the politicians you voted for at 202-224-3121 and tell them NO MORE AMNESTIES!. YES TO A PERMANENT E-VERIFY! BUILD THE ORIGINAL TWO-TIER FENCE! ENFORCE THE 1986 (IRCA) IMMIGRATION LAW THAT'S ON THE BOOKS. DON'T OVERPOPULATE AMERICA!

Finding out about E-Verification, 287 G local police arrest , No-Match-Letters, 1986 Simpson/Mazzoli bill, and other immigration enforcement laws, the reader should GOOGLE--NUMBERSUSA and JUDICIAL WATCH? Here you will find the absolute truth and not the meandering propaganda addressed by the special interest lobbyists or the deceiving national press. We can burying the head in the proverbial sand, or do something to save your quality of life in our nation. E-Verify from the beginning has been demonized, and only bloggers like me brought its operation to gain national attention? IT WORKS! So without public outcry, the bill would have ended up in a dusty draw of the Senate. Now--these same people are out to crush 287 G, because it also works.

Yet right now the usual suspects are requesting the Federal court delay the full implementation of E-verify for government contractors. I'm sure that pro-illegal immigrant lawmakers such as Sen Harry Reid, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Homeland Security chief Napolitano and many more, will try to use their influence on behalf of greedy businesses who demand cheap wage workers to join their slavery forces. After federal training local police have the authority to check a persons identity and detain them for ICE. President Obama is currently being pressured to rescind the no-match-letter. A immigration tool that notifies employers of discrepancies in a persons identity, for a right to be employed.

Patrick, thanks for being concerned about the health and welfare of my cows. I can assure you that they are healthy and very well fed.

Your 8:52 post was so FOS and arrogant. You don't know any more about "man made" global warming than I do. However, there are many much smarter than you and I who agree that it is not proven. Back in the early 70's, scientist claimed that we where headed for another ice age.....imagine that.

I am not opposed to alternative fuels, in fact I am for them. Someone earlier posted that you could make fuel from algae. I say bring it on. I have enough in my swimming pool to fuel several cars. But until we have a cost effective alternative, I say use our resources.

When you said, "I have no fear for the future because I know evently the government will oversee healthcare", I knew then there was no hope for this discussion. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

As for which universe I'm on, I suspect you and I are in the same solar system but you need to get your head out of Uranus.

Why do you think the Republican party is soo against reasonable, responsible, much needed Healthcare Reform? Because their major political contributors ($) are INSURANCE COMPANIES, INSURANCE COMPANIES and more INSURANCE COMPANIES. The insurance companies are making billion dollar profits every year and they do not want that gravy train to end. It always comes down to money.

Have you ever noticed the demographics of those who are against healthcare reform and those who are for it!

Basically wealthy Americans who already have insurance do not want change. Those with large companies under a group plan do not want change. Those on or soon to be on Medicare do not want change. (No you will not lose your benefits)

However, any other regular American who is unable to afford an individual or private plan, or who is uninsured altogether, obviously wants a level playing field. We all just want basic health coverage without having to file Bankruptcy to get it!

What you all have to realize is that even the lucky individuals who have insurance now will be unable to afford it in a few years without reform.

The Goverment is ALREADY providing insurance in the form of:

VA

Medicare

Medicaid

Public options have already been around for years.

scherflaw: you are a late arrival to the party. Conservatives have many, many times on several different threads spoken for health care reform, tort reform, etc. What we do not want is ObamaCare. I have health insurance not because I am lucky but because I have a job. Luck has nothing to do with it.
What part have you played in the increase in insurance premiums by representing your clients in frivolous lawsuits? How much more do we pay for goods and services due to frivolous law suits? How much malpractice insurance are doctors forced to carry to protect themselves from people like you?
Thanks for pointing out the current government run health care in the form of VA, medicare, and medicaid. Now, tell us how financially sound medicare and medicaid are.

Read about it. You should be proud. Schwarzenegger had the good sense to veto the same measure a year ago. Let's hope he vetoes it again.

I am glad to see the interest in the issue of healthcare reform. I have traveled to Europe and Canada in recent years and Japan in my youth. My sister has lived in Canada for many years. The medical care systems in each country is different (England, France, Germany, Japan & Canada). None would trade their system for ours. Regardless of your economic stature you will receive quality medical care and not be bankrupt afterward. Businesses large and small benefit because they don't have the expense of providing insurance for their employees. Yes, a government subsidy to these companies. All of the above mentioned nations have a longer expected life span and lower infant mortality rates than the USA. All of the above mentioned nations pay higher taxes to support the healthcare systems. Just as we would.

Back to the program goals: Provide affordable quality healthcare to every citizen and control rapidly rising healthcare cost. Stop letting the news media lying to you about what is our is not in the bills before congress. Don't get stuck on the media talking points: abortion and illegals.

I don't like any of the 5 bills because they keep for profit insurance companies in the healthcare system. I would much prefer a one payer system with medical personnel licensed and working for the federal or state governments (thus working for us). Fox News said, currently insurance companies consume $0.33 of every healthcare dollar spent. The AARP said medical malpractice suits consume $0.002 of every healthcare dollar. What is more important, elimination of the insurance cost or tort reform?

I will say it again. The conservative hold overs in congress have offered no constructive ideas on the healthcare reform issue for the last 14 years and I don't expect they will during the current debate.

Sherflaw...I hate to be the one to tell you this, but all those programs you listed (VA, MEDICARE, MEDICADE...as well as everything else in recent budgets) are hopelessly in the RED. "Broke" as many town hall participants suggest. And, now you want the Government to expand its role to include one sixth of the US economy. NO THANKS!!

Posted by cbrown05 (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 6 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Patrick...cute comparison of the numbers. Problem is, you apparently don't have an analytical enough mind to correctly interpret them.

Keep in mind that exhorbinate amounts of money are wasted in the medical field by hospitals and doctors who are practicing defensive medicine. In other words, doing tests and procedures that are not necessary simply to keep a potential lawsuit at bay. Meaningful tort reform would clearly knock $0.12 - $0.15 off every healthcare dollar spent.

Addressing tort reform would impact all expenses associated with healthcare...including personal expenses like gasoline, baby sitters, time off work...etc. No one has figured in loss of productivity when the work place is vacated for that unnecessary visit to the doctor or hospital.

One thing is for sure...the lawyers aren't complaining!!!

And, why is tort reform not in the current 1,000-plus page Pelosi healthcare bill? It's really quite simple...90% OF CONGRESS IS MADE UP OF LAWYERS.

Posted by MoreCowBell (anonymous) on September 5, 2009 at 8:17 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Given the governments track record at running programs, it is beyond comprehension why people would want to turn over 1/6 of the economy to them. The federal government does nothing efficiently. Every program they run is mismanaged and broke. Why would you expect this to be any different? You will pay higher taxes to fund this disaster and it will go broke just as every other program they operate.

Solve the illegal immigration problem, remove all regulations that hamper competition, pursue tort reform, require insurance companies to cover pre-existing conditions, provide for coverage to those who can't afford insurance and keep the federal government out except as a watchdog.

The bottom line is it's not about giving you great health care, it's about controlling you.

Brittanicus: Senator Ted Kennedy was also a long time strong proponant for ABORTION RIGHTS.

The borders must remain open because of "amero-union"...2 weeks ago in Guadalajara Obama promised Mexico's Pres. Calderon and Canada's P.M. Stephen Harper, that he would "continue to work to fix America's broken immigration system," which most people see as code words for amnesty for illegal aliens.

He DID NOT promise to stop the flow of illegal drugs and people coming across our southern border, but he did say he wanted "to stem the illegal SOUTHBOUND flow of American guns and cash that helps fuel this extraordinary violence."

In other words, he was blaming the U.S. for Mexican drug violence. In fact, most of the guns found at Mexican crime scenes are NOT American..

They also decided to change the words "amero-union" to "economic integration" and "labor mobility". President Calderon DEMANDED unlimited "labor mobility" and asserted that it is unthinkable for the U.S. to function "without the contribution of the Mexican laborers and workers".

Obama reaffirmed his commitment to pass the Cap and Trade bill so he would be hailed as a hero at the upcoming United Nations climate-change conference in Copenhagen. He also promised TO TAKE THE LEAD by reducing U.S. emissions by 80%...

After rereading Doctor Scherflaw's blogs on "Obama Depiction Posses Questions", I am sorry, but I just cannot believe the person writing is an attorney...it must be his receptionist or perhaps one of his children. I suppose there's no Law against that.

But still, I don't think professionals take the time to blog with phrases like "GO DEMOCRATES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
and allow mispelled words to go WWW in his name,
or statements like: "this "brain-dead" person actually has a PhD, I have to wonder what YOUR educational level is."
But when challenged, offers a JD in place of PhD. I suppose anyone could get the 2 confused.

And here's a beauty (there are plenty) "Oh and by the way, Glen Beck still sucks his thumb."
One more: "Go I amabookworm, Go I amabookworm, power to the masses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" [Reminds one of the Progressive Insurance Ad]
Last one, I promise: "I think I will take that beach trip to Red Level [to visit Theresa Tolbert?]. I heard the surf is up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picture this person writing as being about the age of one of my grandaughters - 14, or a very old white man trying to be cute. I am sorry, really, but that is my impression I am receiving. Can it be true we have such a person here in Andalusia claiming a very high intellect, has many followers and lots of clients? This is a conundrum I wish to never think about again.

This is a only my opinion. God bless whoever this person is.

Good morning citizens, I have read these comments and it seems that Andalusia is not back woods, unread southerners anymore. We have some very intelligent minds lurking behind their keypads. Do not be afraid to speak out as long as it is courteous and non offensive. Our country is in a change right now that has been a long time in comming, of social and economic trends that will never be the same anymore as in the past. Our federal government that was created in 1776 does now regulate our post offices, banks, FDIC, Food & Drug Admn.,national forest, military and selective service, veterans, firearms, passports and borders,
roads and highways, civil rights, social security, minimum wage, disaster relief, FEMA, almost every American life is protected and served by this government. Healthcare, if added will only be better for the people if approved, just like all the other above mentioned services for the citizens. These services I mention above employ's million's of people and provide for their families and future. The economy is in a state of 'collapse' and now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.

Shamrock: you know by now that a lot of people use this section to express what they will not express publicly...I, too, am guilty of that sometimes because if I spoke as harshly in public as I do here at times, I would be locked up or have lawsuits filed against me (and it has happened in the past), but, the reason I use a username instead of my real name is because I write for a few papers, mags, and am a published songwriter, so, I have to guard my name for legal reasons. With that said, scherflaw may be just releasing pent-up anger at day's end or may actually believe what they say. Anyway, I agree with you and may that person have a 'blessed' holiday. Now, a question for you...don't answer it if you don't want, but, did you stand and ask a question or make a statement at Wed's meeting? I was sitting on the left facing the stage with some medical personnel I know and I think I i'd you. Just wondering, no big deal. I know I enjoy our banter, along with WAtidefan, and a few others, and, if you have not already done so, read today's guest by-line with Gary Palmer, very well researched...NO BS. Have a safe holiday.

Welcome aboard spprtVets, as always you are the voice of reason and make good sense, but, how much of your comments are satire? Maybe I read you wrong sometimes, but, your wit appears btw the lines and hidden in the text. Either way, it has taken since 1776 to make most of these ideas work, so, let's take a little more time and a more sensible attitude toward health reform. It is something that cannot be fixed this quickly...look how long after the Civil War it took for the Civil Rights Act, and look at my people, the Nation, we still don't have all that was taken from us and most of us are treated the same as immigrants are treated, so, yes, we all need to pull together, fix the economy, reign in our elected officals, be Americans together for a common cause and stop fighting among ourselves...but, and this is a big BUT, the liberal Demos have to back down and start trying to be a part if it, too. This is just my opinion and spprtVets, you are another with whom I enjoy sharing comments. Happy 4th.

SupprtVets: Great points taken! If you want to read more of these very intelligent minds, check out OPINION and click on "Who are the Real Racists" if you haven't already. You'll get a good idea from both sides, and you be the judge of who the intelligent minds are...very, very educational.

We have had several veterans in my family in 2 Wars:

WWII both in Europe and the Pacific - the latter claimed one, my uncle, Rudy, who was only 19, went to rescue his buddies after they were bombed, drove his jeep over a bridge and a bomb under it blew up. He lived but a short time in the arms of a Chaplain Priest.

My other uncle, Cecil, was taken prisoner by the Japs and thrown in the hold of a Jap ship with his men, many of whom died of starvation down in there. The Air Corpsmen didn't know their boys were in that ship and bombed it - my uncle escaped and swam in the shark infested waters and was rescued. He went into service weighing 180lbs, and came out weighing 87 lbs. What stamina and courage they all had. And another uncle, Smitty, was in the Korean War!

My father and his 4 brothers, Cecil was one of them, and one sister were all in the service during WWII. The men were all in the Air Corps. Dad was stationed in France, and as he spoke French, he told some great stories about how he could understand what the people were actually saying - and then surprise them by answering in French. But it was very dangerous where he was, he was a hedgehopper.

I have my Dad's Medals that my granchildren are so excited to see and I let them put them on their shirts for a bit (they're quite heavy) and they feel so proud - they just beam!
I tell them all the stories my Father told me and show them the photos taken of him in uniform and a few in France by his single engine plane that he used hedgehopping.
I have great pictures of my Dad and his brothers altogether before they left for the fronts.

God bless every Veteran soldier both home and abroad! This family is so very proud of you!

Shamrock post at 12:05: I have also wondered the same thing about scherflaw. At one point, I considered that perhaps one of his children (and I don't know that he has any) was using his identity. You have to log out, you know.
Scherflaw has not yet explained his post claiming to have a PhD. He wrote it as PHD. He did post about his law degree, but didn't explain why he told an untruth. He also has not responded concerning his contribution as a " good ambulance chaser" ( his words) to the cost of health care insurance. He has praised democrats as being better able to run our nation, but has not yet defended democrats in California voting to force school children to study the life of a pedophile who also bragged about his blatant lies.
Patrick: Funny thing. I don't get the same response from Canadians I know and American citizens who have family in Canada. While living in Texas, I met Canadians who could afford to travel to Texas for preventative care from a dermatologist. For some strange reason, they were trying to avoid melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. No preventative care for them in Canada. I have posted previously on another thread about the statements of the new head of the Canadian Medical Association. If you want to know her opinion, google it. After all, she should know.

Many of my associates in the private sector & the gov't traveled to these places mentioned and they are "not" on board with the Obama plan...I personally traveled as a rep for gov't contractors for several years and although most of my time was Central and South America, the medical attention was not there, unless you had a pocket full of money. My people in Canada have nothing good to say and my few associates in England speak very poorly of their experiences...they are all in the middle/common income group. Why won't anyone besides Fox put out these facts? Oh, and, by the way, WAtidefan/Shamrock, the only ones who have put and support pedophiles back on the streets are all liberal Demos and scherflaw, you don't really need to let me know who you are...'nuff said. That is the only explanation that I can come up with to explain some of the people who post here, they must be POD PEOPLE! I stopped being serious on this forum awhile ago when I realized that the blind political hatred evidenced here makes a rational analyzation of the issues impossible for some of you. In that spirit, "Go Scherflaw, go Scherflaw, and Patrick too!!!" Let's have a revitalization of the Democratic party here in Covington County because after all it's our county too! Out with the old and in with the new. Oh I almost forgot, I HEARD that Glenn Beck was a Crack(ed) Symbologist. Normal people look at some facts and evidence and form an opinion based off of those. It seems to me that many people in this county/country first decide what is right, then only listen to sources that support that position. Anything that remotely contradicts it is a conspiracy trying to undermine the truth. I keep wondering what part of the brain the people who think this way are missing- then I remember how doublethink works.
Seriously, we need an active branch of the democratic party here in this county. There are people in this county who need a voice, myself included. We need someone to be a leader for us, how about you Scherflaw or you Patrick?

scherflaw: when have I attacked you? I have just asked you to explain why you said you have a PhD when evidently you don't. I have asked you about your contribution to increased insurance fees since you sue insurance companies and I have asked your opinion of dems in the California Assembly. How in the world is this attacking you? When we have ObamaCare do you plan to sue government doctors for malpractice? Good luck with that.
You, on other threads, have referred to republicans as "angry, old white men" that doesn't seem very civil to me. No, scherflaw, I don't get your point. You, like most liberals, claim to want civility but resort to attacks yourselves. Knock yourself out revitalizing the democrat party in CC. Republicans and Independents aren't going away. Our efforts to stop ObamaCare will continue because scherflaw America is our country too and we have just as much right to speak as you do.
It is unbelievable to me that you accuse Republicans of being bullies. Coming from an Obama supporter that is just too ridiculous for words.
Just so you know, I am not a Republican; I am not angry; I am not old; I am not a man but I am white. And if standing up for what I believe makes me one of the Pod People so be it. Count me as a Proud Pod Person.

Times change - we fail to realize what Obama is attempting to do AS CHANGE has been simmering slowly on the back burner for over 100 years in our country.
Obama is their Catalyst in bringing it to the front burner and getting it boiling - to make it happen NOW; because, some of the 'old white men," are getting VERY old, like David Rockefeller and Kissinger, George Soros, Gorby...they want to see some real action goin' on before they depart from this world - action towards their World Control through the United Nations.
World Control is really called the New World Order.

Shamrock, I guess maybe my word 'reunifying' must have been one of President George Bush's words he made up, I'm sorry. You know he said he 'was a reunificator'. My suggestion was to have meant this; With the new media outlets we now have that were NOT available to the generations and elections previously to the now norm, our county should, for the citizens best interest, have a 'sort of' new polictical wave. That is to mean, 2010 is an election year in Alabama and Covington County, lets examine our cantidates 'this time' and elect on the new and current issues that face our community and area on a whole scale, instead of just 'politics' as usual and vote merely on just 'name recognition', and who's been in whatever office so long. Andalusia and Covington County can be trend setters in this new wave of a new frontier of elected officials, and the spokespeople can be 'spokesmen' or 'ladies' of Todays World instead of 'benchwarmers'. I have learned a lot reading these columns and am really very appreciative that I've been allowed to be part of the process, and I personally Thank Each and every one of you!

So many comments since I last looked at this article, although many not to the point. For those who love the Bush boys and the Bush war, all the improvements to the healthcare system are trying to achieve are what he asked for in 2003. "I want every Iraq citizen to have access to quality healthcare." Do it for Americans now!

I finally read the proposed cost limits to participants in the program this morning in an article about Max Baucus. Cap payout for a family at $10,000 and individual at $5,000 per year. I can live with these numbers. The conservative republicans can still let their insurance companies make all the profits they want to. It will just cost more in taxes. Repeal the Bush Boy tax cuts and most of that will be recouped. Tax insurance company profits and more of it would be recouped.

Control the cost of healthcare. Without a public option I don't see how this is possible. The greed of medical industry providers and insurance companies will continue to push prices higher and I expect faster now they have become scared the government will intervene in their money making scheme.

The problem is part of the swinging economic pendulum: In the early part of the 20th century with big industry and railroads. The government broke up the trusts and forced the recognition of labor unions. Then the unions became strong and corrupt. The government controlled this and now the pendulum swings back to where big companies and businesses.

We pay our congressman and senators big bucks to offer solutions and trust their intelligence will find a middle ground. I still say our politicians from this area have only been spectators and no people with no constructive ideas of their own. Senator Session's said he believed the principles he grew up with are valuable. So do I. If he would get off his #$## and formulate his own proposals they might be of value.

Patrick, a point very well taken that I must agree with your last paragraph, but the Junior US Senator Sessions is still fresh in a new 6 year term that still has many years to go as our represenative in Washington. I did not really care for him much until he came to Andalusia, but I picked up on his charisma and charm and I really do beleive that he will try his best to forward our sentiments to Washington. But, however, our responcibility is to offer suggestions to him that are really 'within his scope' in Washington, and we can do that, and he will listen. The other guy........the other one in Washington, I can't think of his name, married Claude Nevin's daughter from McArther Technical College in Opp, from Elba. We all rallied around him and voted him in years ago before my hair turned gray and hadn't seen him since, except on TV fighting other folks in Washington on other issues that has nothing to do with us. That's the politics we need to voice about, do you agree? Or have I been asleep the 25 years he's been up there?

Patrick: Senator Vitter and Sessions are onto that very thing, a "30'" page healthcare bill which includes Tort Reform, while taking their vacation time to speak at town halls and Senate Doctor meetings in as many States as they can. If you are sincere in wanting to see a conservative proposal, I am sure Sen. Vitter would be glad to fill you in.

I can assure you or any other Progressive, my family is NOT a Bush fan nor a Republican. Our goal is to alert our counrtrymen and women of the erosion to our Bill of Rights and Constitution by the Socialist-Progressives in office no matter what PARTY they affiliate themselves with.

You apparently have what you want in the present Democratic Progressive progroms, in which you play 'follow the leader' to a tee. We on the other hand, prefer to think for ourselves by gathering information, weighing in both sides of the issues, and taking a positive stand on the side of truth.

Here's the way I see it: those who don't mind repeating lies to get what they want VS those who savor the truth to preserve and protect what is good, and remove what is dangerous. That's not too hard to understand now is it, Patrick.

As I read these posts, I was struck by the juvenile tenor of some posts. The purpose of this forum is to share opinions, ideas and helpful info. I do not know anyone accusing democrats of being anything less than,as posted by scherflaw, "law abiding, tax paying, religious, family oriented, members of this community". The same writer added,"We {democrats} deserve a voice too". scherflaw encouraged his fellow democrats to stand up and fight against injustice and tyranny. That rally cry makes me believe scherflaw has been won over to the side of light! We ALL are fighting against injustice and tyranny and I applaud scherflaw for encouraging others to join the battle! Injustice is defined as: violation of rights, unfairness! If you are fighting against injustice, I am there with you! Tyranny is defined: Oppressive power, a gov't in which absolute power is vested in a single ruler. If you are fighting tyranny, I am there! Conservatives/Republicans (C/R) are as law abiding, tax paying, religious, family oriented, members of this community as their Liberal/Democratic (L/D)counterparts. C/R's possess the same rights as L/D's.

Our differences arise from our interpretations of injustice and tyranny. These differing opinions create the breeding ground for anger and frustration. I object to the injustice of Pelosi's description of C/R protesters. Her remarks flies in the face of freedom of speech and the right to assemble. However, L/D's think it is perfectly acceptable to curtail speech by C/R's. If L/D's are against injustice, then why not fight for the free speech of ALL Americans? I will listen to the speech of any L/D as long as it is not hate filled. I may not agree, but at least I will listen. This is not a trait of the typical L/D. There is the disagreement on the definition of tyranny. How can the minority party be accused of tyranny? This country was not founded on a one ruler order. I object to Obama attempting to create tyrannical rule. The 30+ czars he has appointed, circumvent vetted cabinet members! This is Obama's way of skirting the US Constitution! Obama envisions a gov't with absolute power. How can anyone overlook the choices Obama has made, especially an avowed communist such as Van Jones? He should have never had the ear of Obama! Just how close will his radical friends get to nuclear codes?? It scares the me beyond belief! Obama's choices prove the true direction he is attempting to send America! He salivates for the single ruler/single payer system! If you are L/D and abhor tyranny, why do you want gov't in every aspect of your life? If there are sound ideas our there please share. Because of the state of our Union it would behoove us to stop the sarcastic juvenile barbs hurled in this forum and put forth meaningful thoughts for solutions. We should all hold ourselves to a high standard. That is simply what Americans do. I would love to read thoughtful ideas rather than shoot and scoot tactics that have no meaning whatsoever!

LoyalAmerican: another great post.
During the last election, I listened with an open mind to a 45 minute speech by Obama. When I tried to calmly discuss some of his major points that were troubling to me with a friend who is a supporter, her reply was "you don't like him because he is half black" i.e. I am a racist. I realized then that it was futile to attempt discussion with L/D's.

At least Van Jones is now history. But notice, it was a smear campaign against him not anything he said or did. Typical.

I think that the time has come for somebody at the Star-News to do what ever is necessary to block Outlaw from making any more comments. I have noticed that bloggers, for the most part, will take to task and set straight an errant fellow blogger. However, if someone puts me on notice that they ARE coming to harm me, or if there is vulgar profanity written on this blog, I will, respectively, call law enforcement or Andalusia Star News. Patrick: Your statement,"conservative republicans can still let their insurance companies make all the profits they want to. It will just cost more in taxes." My counter to you is that the liberal democrats can continue to allow the trial lawyers to make all the profits they want to. It will just cost more in health care!

To save time, I'll cut and paste my words from another post!

If Obama wanted to stop spiraling medical costs, he would embrace tort reform. Doctors are forced to practice medicine from a defensive position due to lawsuit abuse from well-heeled lawyers! Obama caved to the trial lawyers and closed the door to any significant "real" changes to health care costs.

May I pose a suggestion.......? 1.9 million Alabamaians voted in the last general election. In less than 12 months the parties primary elections will have been held, nominees picked, and a month away from the general election. Alabama and Covington County will overwhelmingly vote in high numbers to elect again the 78 year old Senior US Senator for another 6 year term. He will be nearing 85 years old at the end of his next term. He is going to 'win', and already has a Republican warchest of over $15 million dollars for this campaign. That roughfly fiqures a quarter of a million dollars per county for the states 67 counties to spend on advertisement. He will win without ever stepping foot in Andalusia's Kiwanis Building and addressing the people. Andalusia residents have held 'statetwide' offices before, with the same voters, and won. Why can't we have someone from Andalusia run for this seat that is 'open' for election, I'm sure we could pull together a dynamite team of support.

Shamrock,
You commented on my entry this morning, but said nothing. Are you a politician also?

Are all progressives socialist? Define socialism. Stop watching the national republican network (i.e. FOX) and start thinking for yourself.

Socialism is when a government spends its tax revenue for the betterment of its citizens. Maybe we need more socialism in this country. We could stand to be a nation of the people, for the people and by the people. In recent years it has been mostly of the wealthy (rich politicians), for the wealthy (no explanation needed), by the people (all of us pay taxes).

LoyalAmerican,
I fear far less for our nation with the Moderate Democrats currently in power than I did with Cowboy Bush and his autocrats. My in-laws in Germany quickly drew the comparison to Bush's appointment, a terrorist attack and the 911 bill resending citizens rights and eliminating them when a national emergency is declared; to Hitler's appointment, a terrorist attack and passing the emergency rule legislation suspending German citizens’ rights. Any comparison to an autocrat made to our current president is missing the aim.

Posted by LoyalAmerican (anonymous) on September 7, 2009 at 5:56 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Patrick: Where on earth did you get your definition of socialism?
Merriam-Webster, socialism: 1. any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.2. a system of society or group living in which there is no private property.3. a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done.

Socialism is NOT "of the people, for the people and by the people." It is of the government, for the government and by the government! You know, you can be one of the wealthy in this country if you determine a need and assume the risk to fulfill that need! Under socialism, that would be an impossibility! Under socialism you will produce, engineer, plant, drive, eat, live, travel, etc. ONLY at the directive of the government. So NO we do NOT need "more socialism" in America!
Addtionally, I do not get my news from Fox. There are 1001+ avenues for open minded, intelligent people to travel in their quest for knowledge. Your definition for socialism represents a glaring need for you to seek out those avenues!

Patrick: There is no "moderate" democrat in power! Obama is a radical, in my opinion. I am a bit confused with your comparison of Bush and Hitler and your statement regarding their "appointments". Autocrat you say? Where are you getting this misinformation? Bush did not rule with absolute power!! There is a small thing called congress! I usually enjoy a good debate, but you are all over the board. I suppose you also believe that Bush was a co-conspirator of September 11, 2001? Please jump on the universal highway of knowledge and leave MSNBC and all the other liberal media in the dust. Find your own answers. It is there for your consumption!
I am extremely up to speed on the German mindset, history, traditions and government. Your attempt at drawing parallels between president Bush and Hitler and the Nazi regime falls flat on its face.

LoyalAmerican: thanks for your patience. Patrick's definition of socialism is a new one for me.
Patrick, are you a truther? Do you believe that President Bush was behind the 911 attacks? If the Reichstag fire is the terrorist attack you are referring to, why is President Bush no longer in power? Hitler appointed himself chancellor for life. Where is President Bush now? While you're at it, please name one specific right that you lost under Bush. What is one thing that you were doing before Bush was elected that you stopped from doing after 911? Specifics, please. Not broad generalities; not talking points.

The purpose of healthcare reform is to make quality healthcare available to all citizens and control the rapid increase in healthcare cost.

I repeat, the AARP says tort reform amounts to $0.002 per $100 of healthcare cost. Doctors like to talk how bad it is and order additional test. They don't mention how much the hospital kicks back per each test they order. What is the true motivation?

Posted by winkie (anonymous) on September 7, 2009 at 10:48 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Good question Patrick!

Posted by LoyalAmerican (anonymous) on September 8, 2009 at 8:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Patrick: First, where do you get information regarding kickbacks paid by hospitals to doctors? I have not read this and would like to do do.

AARP states that medical malpractice represents ONLY 2% of health cost. Doesn't sound like much does it? But, when you consider $2.4 TRILLION is spent on health care annually that 2% translates to a whopping $40,000,000,000.00 PLUS PLUS! There can not be any meaningful health reform without tort reform! As I stated previously, doctors are in a defensive mode. They are so afraid of malpractice lawsuits, they order every test from A-Z to cover their rear ends. I have a personal case in point. I complained to doc of severe headache, he orders and MRI, X-rays and referral to neurologist. Grand total to find out it was a sinus infection, $4,016!! He had to rule out tumor.... just in case there may be a lawsuit down the road! The average medical malpractice insurance rates cost a doctor $200,000.00 per year. If an OB delivers 100 babies in a calendar year, $2,000 of his/her fee for that delivery goes to pay the insurance premium. Either the gov't is paying for the birth or private insurance is paying for the birth. In the end you and I are paying for the birth through higher taxes and higher premiums. It is a double whammy! Obama has taken tort reform off the table, because he made a back room dope deal with the trial lawyers, similar to the deal he made with the drug companies. If a fly on the wall could talk, I'll wager the fly would have heard something like (caution, this is parody) "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours, plus I'll raise you to a free week at the spa, plus $25M to your reelection campaign!!" To which Obama replied, " OK boys, that's a deal and I'll make sure no one touches you OR your profits!" Also when frivolous lawsuits, winning hundreds of thousands of dollars are paid out; when some idiot sues because the coffee was too hot or some other asinine excuse, we all suffer the consequences by having our premiums raised. But, the lawyer representing the plaintiff pockets 1/3 of the settlement for a frivolous suit that should have NEVER been brought to court! We should have a mechanism in place for egregious medical malpractice where a doctor loses their license.
