PH#039;s Coleman in prep spotlight

Author Coleman of Pleasant Home High School rambled for 427yards - the third highest one-game rushing total in state history - to move into the prep football spotlight selected by the Alabama High School Athletic Association. A survey of football games statewide is made weekly.

Coleman ran 40 times for 427 yards and four touchdowns, including a 31-yard scamper with 3:25 left for the game-winning score in a 36-33 victory over Cottonwood.

Then he preserved the win with 50 seconds remaining by snatching the ball away from a Cottonwood ball carrier at the one-yard line.

The state one-game rushing record is 457 by Michael Perry of Cherokee County in 1991.

Steve Carson of Keith posted the second highest total, 440 yards in 1985.

Other spotlight performances:

JaMarcus Russell of Williamson completed 22 of 48 passes for 404 yards and three touchdowns and also ran for two scores in a 34-0 win over Shaw.

Daniel Jackson of Bradshaw rushed for 303 yards and four TDs in a 49-0 win over Brewer.

Rusty Yeatts intercepted three passes-one a 55-yard return for the game-clinching touchdown -in sparking Moody to its first victory of the season, 21-6 over Hayden.

Andre Moultry of McAdory recorded 16 tackles - four for losses - and caused a fumble in an 18-3 triumph over Thompson.

Ira Tolbert ran for 309 yards and four TDs and Jacques Dunning passed for two TDs, ran for one and returned an interception for another in Marengo's 64-7 win over J. U. Blacksher.

Eric Gray rushed for 277 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 38-yard scoring pass in West Morgan's 35-6 triumph over Sulligent.

Joe Craddock of Briarwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns in

a 34-12 victory over West End-Birmingham.

Ryan Gale of Oak Mountain averaged 45.3 yards on six punts in a 7-0 overtime loss to Pelham.

Patrick White rushed 20 times for 289 yards and four touchdowns (3, 15, 84, and 95 yards) in Daphne's 44-43 overtime loss to Vigor.

Eric Albright of Sylvania ran 16 times for 271 yards in a 48-7 win over North Sand Mountain.

Maurice Calhoun rushed for 206 yards and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 65-yard run with one minute to play in Mary Montgomery's 24-17 victory over Murphy.

Nathan Fordham of Boaz, raising his career rushing total to a school-record 3,157 yards, ran for 205 yards in a 48-14 win over West Point.

Brandon Waters and Nick Norwood combined for 238 yards rushing and three touchdowns, Waters also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a score while Norwood blocked a punt in Sweet Water's 42-14 triumph over Linden.

Chris Nickson of Pike County passed for 173 yards and three touchdowns and added 31 yards rushing and a touchdown in a 39-20 win over Elba.

Ross Parker ran for three touchdowns returned a kickoff 82 yards for another score in Hatton's 49-14 victory over Tanner.

James Harris of Hazlewood returned two interceptions for touchdowns while teammates Laquinte Bolding and Kenneth Abernathy returned one each for a TD in a 59-0 win over Vina.

DeMarlo Blount ran for 194 yards and three touchdowns in Ashville's 28-6 victory over Lincoln.

Chris Baker of Fairfield completed 13 of 27 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-14 loss to Erwin, led by Edwin Peterson's two interceptions.
