Opp hosts regional Saturday

Homecourt advantage came along with the Class 4A, Area 2 Championship the Opp Lady Bobcats won in high school volleyball action Tuesday.

The Lady Bobcats outscored the visiting Andalusia Lady Bulldogs 45-12 winning the first three games of the match to clinch the area crown.

In the first game of the match, Opp earned a 15-3 win against the Lady Bulldogs.

Andalusia went on top 1-0 early after a good serve by Hope Riley.

Opp rallied to take a 4-1 edge behind the serving of Kayla Ziglar.

Hannah Bush then served for a point for Andalusia and Kelley Davis served for a point for Opp as the Lady Bobcats remained on top by a score of 5-2.

Kristen Champion had a power serve give the Opp players trouble for another point and Andalusia was down 3-5.

Opp forced a side-out and then rallied for two points behind the serving of Christen Short, including one point via an ace.

Opp did not give up another point the rest of the game winning by a score of 15-3. Davis served for the final four points of the match.

In the second game, Ashley Mock served for four consecutive points for a 4-0 Opp lead after forcing a side-out by Andalusia.

Hannah Bush served an ace for Andalusia to make the score 1-4 and Sarah Anne Wilkes served for two points later in the match to get the Lady Bulldogs within one point of Opp at 3-4.

Opp, however, scored a point after a quality serve by Ingrid Patterson and never trailed in the game going on to record a 15-5 win.

Tiffany Anderson served for five consecutive points for Opp to lead the charge and Kim Coxwell served for two points. Ashley Mock served for the final three points of the game. Ingrid Patterson earned the final point with a spike.

In the third game, Opp earned a 15-4 win after jumping out to a 4-0 lead behind serves by Ashley Mock and Kayla Ziglar.

Kim Coxwell once again proved to be a key ingredient for Opp serving for nine consecutive points to get Opp out to a 14-2 lead before a side-out on game- and match-point.

Opp, however, got a side-out and turned to Christen Short for a serve to clinch game- and match-point.

The serve was good and Opp scored the point for a 15-4 victory.

The win improves Opp's record to 18-9 on the season. Andalusia falls to 14-8 on the season with the loss.

Both squads earned a ticket to the regional tournament as area champion and area runner-up. Opp hosts the Regional Tournament on Saturday with the first matches set to begin at 9 a.m.
