Lady Bulldogs sweep Opp

Pitching was the key for the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs as they traveled to Opp and swept the Lady Bobcats in a softball doubleheader Tuesday.

The Lady Bulldogs won the first game 10-0 as Rachel Jones and Ashley Johnson combined their efforts to pitch a no-hitter. The duo recorded 11 strikeouts in the game.

Jones pitched the first three innings and struck out six Opp batters.

Johnson pitched two innings and recorded five strikeouts.

The Lady Bulldogs offense was also clicking as 10 runs crossed the plate for the win.

Heather Self, Katie Tyler, Hayden Odom, Elizabeth Smith, Kayla Brown and Jodi Hanchey all scored one run in the top of the second inning to give Andalusia a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the third inning, the Lady Bulldogs scored four more runs when Self, Tyler, Odom and Jones rounded the bases.

Johnson had a big game at the plate going 2-for-3 with one RBI. Starting catcher Lindsey Carr also had a good day with the bat going 2-for-4 with one RBI.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Andalusia won 3-2.

Katie Howell was the starting pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs and went the distance striking out seven in five innings of work while allowing two runs on just one hit and one walk.

Andalusia went on top 2-0 in the first inning when Self and Odom scored. Odom and Smith had RBI-hits in the inning.

Opp's Lacey Wade scored in the fourth to trim Andalusia's lead to 2-1.

The Lady Bulldogs answered with one run in the top of the fifth when Brown scored on a

fielder's choice by Tyler after Cobe Smith and Howell both reached on bunt singles.

Kim Coxwell scored in the fifth for Opp, but Andalusia held on for a 3-2 win.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 3-2 on the season and host the Straughn Lady Tigers at 3:30 on Thursday.

Opp's next game is Thursday at Luverne with the first pitch set for 4 p.m.
