Wildcats earn area championship

The Florala Wildcats held off the New Brockton Gamecocks for a 5-4 win on Saturday. The win was big because it sends the Wildcats into the playoffs on a winning note.
The Wildcats were named the Class 1A, Area 3 Champions on Saturday after a series of tiebreaker rules were used to determine the area champ. The Pleasant Home Eagles finished the regular season as the area runner-up.
The Wildcats will host a first-round playoff game at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday when Holy Spirit comes to town.
The Eagles will travel to Moundville where they will play American Christian Academy at Hale County High School in a first-round game.
On Saturday, Florala fell behind the Gamecocks 2-0 in the top of the second inning. The Wildcats, however, rallied with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Florala sent three more runs home in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 5-2 lead.
The Gamecocks scored one run in the fifth and one in the sixth, but could not overtake the Wildcats.
Mark Geohagan was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats allowing four runs (three earned) in the game. He struck out six. Marcus Schofield came in and got the save.
Marcus Schofield also had a big day at the plate going 3-for-3 with one RBI. Tyler Hughes was 2-for-2 at the dish with one RBI. Sean Phillips was 1-for-2 with one RBI.
