Square is the place to assemble for support

We gather at the Square in Andalusia for many reasons: art shows, parades, concerts, picnic lunches sponsored by civic organizations, just to name a few. Many of the times, our meetings are social and entertaining.
Sometimes, however, the Square lends itself to more solemn observations. We saw this on Sept. 11, when we gathered to remember the fallen. Candles flickered in the darkness on the anniversary of Roe Vs. Wade to remember the tragedy that is abortion. Another candlelight vigil took place at the beginning of the Iraq war, calling citizens to pray for peace.
On Saturday we have yet another reason to join our hands and hearts together on the Square. There will be a rally for the troops at 7 p.m. Saturday. More than the usual
- and meaningful - speeches of praise and moments of silence will be offered. Family members of those now serving are asked to bring copies of photographs to be placed on display at the Covington Mall.
We have listed many names, many times, of our heroes, those who have gone to Iraq and other areas in the Middle East those who risk their lives to protect our freedoms. The photographs to be placed on this Board of Honor will make them become all the more real, as we see in the soldiers the fine young men and women they are - not just names.
Much has been said about Operation Iraqi Freedom, both for and against the war. But one thing we all stand united in is our concern and support for our troops. At 7 p.m. Saturday, we have the opportunity to express that concern - and share the fear and pride - by gathering together on the Square. Come and see the faces of those for whom we pray, and meet their families. When strength is shared, its growth knows no bounds.
