County wins tournament

When the dust settled at Merchant's Field in Opp late Sunday afternoon, the Covington County 17- and 18-year-old baseball team had earned a first-place trophy at the sixth annual Crispy Chick Memorial Weekend Baseball Tournament.

The Covington County squad, clad in bright orange jerseys, topped the host host Opp Dixie Majors by a score of 11-5 in the title game.

Covington County went on top 4-0 in the top of the first inning and never trailed en route to the win.

Levi Cotton, Christopher "Tank" Huckabaa, Kenny Skipper and Jon Gudson all scored in the first inning for Covington County. Tank had a big hit in the inning. He ripped an RBI-double to the base of the fence in left field. Skipper also had an RBI-double in the frame. Cole Carroll had a two-RBI double in the inning.

Covington County added to the lead in the top of the second inning when Chris Watts (as a courtesy runner for Dewayne Gladwell), Cotton and Clark each scored. Tank had a two-RBI single to center in the inning.

Opp answered with three runs in the bottom of the second when Andrew Harry, Caleb Wilson and Lane Fuller scored.

Covington County added four runs in the top of the third inning for an 11-3 lead. Carroll, Cotton, Tank and Skipper each scored in the inning. Bart Beam had a two-RBI single in the inning.

Opp managed to score one run in the bottom of the fifth and another run in the sixth, but it was not enough as Covington County held on for an 11-5 win. Drew Mims scored in the fifth for Opp. Jacob McCollough scored in the sixth.

Dewayne Gladwell, Justin Clark and Chad Bracewell combined their pitching efforts to hold off the Opp batters.

Covington County ended the tournament with a 3-1 record after a 5-4 win against Elba and two wins against Opp. Covington County topped Opp 6-5 on Saturday. Covington County's lone loss came to Troy by a final score of 12-0.

Opp went 3-2 at the tournament with an 8-7 win against the American Legion Post 80 team from Andalusia on Friday. Opp also topped Elba in tournament play by a score of 12-1.

Enterprise won the Dixie Pre-Majors Tournament with a 5-3 win over Opp on Sunday. Opp's runs came from Michael Hattaway, Andrew Showalter and Cory Johnson.

Enterprise went 3-1 in the tournament. The only loss was to Opp by a final score of

3-2 Saturday night.

Opp went 3-1 in tournament play. Opp also had wins against Coffee County and Covington County in tournament play.
