Andalusia teams in title games

All three Andalusia Babe Ruth All-Stars teams are in position to win a District Championship at the District Tournament being hosted by the Covington County Babe Ruth League at the Straughn School baseball field.

13-YEAR-OLD

The Andalusia 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars began the tournament with a win against the Covington County All-Stars on Thursday.

Andalusia faced Opp

in its next game and fell by a final score of 10-3 to set up a rematch with Covington County. Opp and Andalusia were tied at 2-2 after one inning. Opp's runs came from Garrett Kyser and Jeb McDaniel. Andalusia's runs came from Brannon Bryan and Nick Cooper. The score remained tied until the fifth inning when Opp went on top 5-2 as Mark Linton, Clay Craig and Garrett Blair scored. Opp added three more runs in the sixth when Kyser, Cody Hall and Linton scored for an 8-2 advantage. Kyser and Hall scored again for Opp in the top of the seventh for a 10-3 lead. Andalusia's Jeffry Etheridge scored in the bottom of the seventh, but it was not enough as Opp won 10-3.

Andalusia faced Covington County in the next game and won 11-1 in five innings. James Hogg was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on three hits and six walks. He struck out 12. Twelve of Covington County's 15 outs came on strikeouts. Hogg also had a big game at the plate, scoring three runs. Ryan Godwin scored one run and had two RBIs in the win.

Opp awaited Andalusia in the title game and Andalusia won 9-7 to force the "if game" in the double-elimination tournament. Nathan Shirey and Taylor Culbreth paced the Andalusia All-Stars scored two runs each en route to the win. Bryan, Kyser, Cooper, Taylor Wrench and Justin Ainsworth each scored one run in the win.

14-YEAR-OLD

The Andalusia 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars topped Covington County last Thursday and then dismissed the Opp All-Stars 14-0 on Saturday to advance to the district championship game.

Johnny Jernigan was the winning pitcher against Opp, allowing no runs on two hits and one walk in five innings. He struck out four. Jernigan also scored three runs in the win. Zack Jones and Charles Gunter added two runs each for Andalusia. Michael Berry, MacKenzie Curry, Cory Dukes, LaDarrius McNeil, Jordan Maynor and Chris Atkins scored one run each in the win.

The Covington County All-Stars rebounded from the loss to Andalusia with a 13-0 win against Opp in five innings to advance to the title game for a rematch with Andalusia. Taylor Benton was the winning pitcher for Covington County against Opp, allowing no runs on two hits and no walks. He struck out eight. Benton also scored two runs in the win. Kevin Meeks scored three runs for Covington County in the win. Rhett Dewrell also scored two runs in the win. Andrew Odom, Dusty McDonnell, Devin Maloy, Taylor Wright, Sam Bush and Josh Pettus each scored one run in the win. Maloy had three RBIs in the game and Bush knocked in one run.

15-YEAR-OLD

The Andalusia 15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars are a perfect 2-0 in district tournament play. The Andalusia squad topped Covington County 5-3 in a rain-delayed first-round game. The game ended with a close play at the plate when Josh Johnson gunned down a Covington County runner trying to score. The game was tied up at 3-3 after two innings of play. Andalusia went on top 4-3 in the third when Cory Smith scored. Michael Riley gave Andalusia a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning. Alex Taylor, Curtis Johnson and Josh Johnson scored early in the game for Andalusia. Covington County's runs came from Dusty Lee, Josh O'Ferrell and Heath Bedsole.

Andalusia faced Opp next and won 11-1 in five innings. William Alverson was the winning pitcher, allowing one run on one hit and no walks. He struck out seven. Ben Harry scored three runs in the win. Curtis Johnson, Alex Taylor, Alverson, Myles Hollingsworth, Michael Riley, Cory Smith, Tyler Centner and Jerome Tomberlin each scored one run in the win.

Opp overcame Covington County's All-Stars in the loser's bracket game by a final score of 10-7 to earn a rematch with Andalusia for the district crown. Rhett Barnes had three RBIs and scored a run in the win. Hunter Langford had two RBIs and scored one run. Andrew Weaver and George Patterson scored two runs each for Opp. Ryan Cooke, Garrett Parker, Ben Messick and Jason Cotton scored one run each. Covington County's runs came from Josh O'Ferrell, Bobby Huckabaa, Aaron Tucker, Shane Mitchell and Hunter Canant. O'Ferrell and Canant scored two runs each.
