The Covington County 9 & 10-year-old All-Stars won the Alabama District 5 Little League Championship over the Andalusia All-Stars with a 7-1 victory Saturday night in Brewton.
For Covington County, Steadman Gerber scored twice, with Colter Poole, Fernando Torres, Nick Allen, Zack Lunsford, and Jacob Ganus all scoring one run each.
Lunsford pitched 5 innings, with Poole pitching clean-up in the sixth.
The Covington County team now advances to the State Tournament in Huntsville where they will play District 3 champions.
For Andalusia, a valiant team effort lead them to the Championship game according to team manager Gary Odom.
"We were hitting the ball really well, it was just right at the Covington County players," Odom said. "Both teams were hitting well, the county just found the holes to push the ball through."
Odom said each team played top-notch ball in the game.
"Both defenses were sound, they were just the better team that night," he said. "I'm extremely proud of the Andalusia team though. They had really begun to gel and come together. Every player on the team gave 110 percent. We had some exceptional pitching throughout the tournament and I couldn't have asked for a better group of guys."
One of the things that made Odom so proud of his team was the fact they overcame a first round loss to Opp to make it out of the losers' bracket into the Championship game.
"When we got the chance to play Opp again, and then we beat them, you would have thought these kids had one the world series Š I was proud of them for all of the effort they had put in."
