Opp All-Stars top Andalusia,Brewton

Opp guaranteed a team from Covington County will advance to the state tournament with a 2-1 win against the Brewton All-Stars at the Alabama 11- and 12-year-old District 5 Little League Tournament Wednesday night.

Opp went on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning and then held on for a 2-1 win to advance to the District 5 Tournament Championship Game.

Josh Dunn started the Opp rally with a lead-off double to center field. He moved to second on a passed ball and scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Garrett Russell also scored in the inning for Opp. His run proved to be the eventual game-winning run.

Russell reached on a walk. He moved to second on a single by Colby Wyatt. Brewton got an out when the center fielder threw to third base to retire Nick Weeks, who had to make sure the ball fell in front of the outfielder before he could attempt to race to third.

Spencer Youmans provided the game-winning hit with an RBI-single to plate Russell.

Brewton's lone run came in the fourth inning when Corey Williams hit a solo home run.

Weeks was the winning pitcher going three innings of scoreless baseball.

Galvin Free pitched 2 1/3 innings for Opp. He allowed the lone run.

Youmans pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and got the save. He faced one batter and got a strike out followed by a caught stealing to end the game.

Opp plays the Covington County All-Stars at 7 p.m. tonight in the district title game. The game will be played at the YMCA Sports Park in Brewton.

After falling behind 6-0 against the 11- and 12-year-old Andalusia Little League All-Stars, the Opp All-Stars rallied late in the game for an 8-6 win Tuesday night at the district tournament in Brewton.

Andalusia went on top 6-0 in the first inning when Jay McCord, Christopher Kelly, Corey Morris, Jeffrey Moore, Alex Short and Leslie James scored.

Andalusia remained on top until the fifth inning when Opp rallied with eight runs to take an 8-6 lead.

Opp's runs came from Josh Dunn, Garrett Russell, Colby Wyatt, Galvin Free, Spencer Youmans, Alex Banks and Michael Elmore. Dunn scored twice in the inning.

The loss eliminated Andalusia. Andalusia went 2-2 in tournament play, including a 9-1 win against the Evergreen All-Stars this past Saturday.

Andalusia All-Stars who scored runs against Evergreen are Christopher Kelly, Jay McCord, Alex Short, Mason Lee, Brent Shiver, Jeffrey Moore, Leslie James and Andrew Veasey. Kelly scored twice. Garrett Cross was the winning pitcher allowing just one run on two hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out one.
