Safe driving is a responsibility

There have many accidents in Covington County over the past month. Two friends of mine were in one of the accidents and now one is in critical condition in Mobile and the other is in critical condition in Dothan.

It is important that people think about what they are doing when they are driving. Most of the automobile accidents could be prevented if people would just pay attention to what they are doing.

Think about how fast something like this can happen. These 18-year-old boys were just getting started. One of them was home on leave from the Army where he just finished his basic training. Now he has two broke legs, and burns on much of his body. It is going to be a long road to recovery.

I know that some accidents can't be avoided. There are many people who are being hurt in car wrecks every day.

People should understand that it is important to actually stop at the stop signs and red lights and look before leaving. It is really common sense.

When you are going 60 miles per hour in a 2,000 pound car, of course it is going to hurt if you hit something.

I don't care if you do have the right of way, if you see an 18- wheeler not slowing down at a stop sign, sit still.

I used to be the world's worse about speeding everywhere I went. They caught me. I got a ticket for doing 23 miles per hour over the speed limit. That $120 taught me a good lesson. Even thought it isn't an extremely large amount of money, I don't have the money to waste like that. I don't speed like that anymore. If I had kept driving the way I was driving, it may have been me to be in one of the many fatal accidents that has happened this year.

I just don't want to see any more of my friends or family get in wrecks because of carelessness. There is no sense in it and it just isn't worth it.
