Killing in the world is never a good thing

A reporter announced that troops believed they had killed Saddam Hussein's two sons. My first thought was "good they will not be able to hurt and terrorize people anymore." Then I had another, more troubling realization.

"That means I am glad about their deaths," I said to my television screen. "That doesn't seem right."

This got me thinking about what I was feeling and about the world in which we live.

I realize these were bad men. They tortured and killed innocent people in the name of control, and in some instances just for the heck of killing.

They can't do that now and that is a blessing for the citizens of Iraqi who lived in such fear for so long. Still, the Bible says "Thou shalt not kill."

It does not read, "Thou shalt not kill (unless those you kill are killers too).

I know evil triumphs if good people do nothing and these two brothers' actions were certainly evil.

Still, the Bible says, "Judge not that ye be not judged," and "Vengeance is mine says the Lord."

But these were bad men who hurt others, and that is wrong. As I thought about this, I remembered words I once saw printed on a young man's tee shirt. "What Would Jesus Do?" it said.

On Wednesday morning another reporter said Hussein's sons definitely died in Tuesday's attack. And also, almost as a footnote in the report, he mentioned the 14-year-old son of one of the brothers was also dead.

"There has to be a better way," I said, "but I don't know what it is."

As I said the words, I was overwhelmed by a feeling of sadness.

Later that day, I heard the lyrics of the Eagles new song, and they fit the way I was feeling.

There's a hole in the world tonight.

There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.

There's a hole in the world tonight.

Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.

They say that anger is just love disappointed.

They say that love is just a state of mind.

But all this fighting over who is anointed,

Oh, how can people be so blind?

There's a hole in the world tonight.

There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.

There's a hole in the world tonight.

Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.

Oh, they tell me there's a place over yonder

Cool water running through the burning sand.

Until we learn to love one another,

We will never reach the Promised Land.

There's a hole in the world tonight.

There's a cloud of fear and sorrow.

There's a hole in the world tonight.

Don't let there be a hole in the world tomorrow.

Saddam's sons are dead and will never hurt anyone again. On one hand, I am glad for the people who feared them, happy they are free of that threat.

But on the other hand, another feeling haunts me - the feeling that killing is never a good thing because it makes that hole in the world grow a little wider.

Reconciling the questions when it is a matter of good facing off against evil is difficult.

The only way I can deal with it is by clinging to that other question, the one printed on the tee shirt.
