Valley begins World Series play Saturday

Valley, Alabama's Babe Ruth baseball team increased its fan base while playing at the 2003 Babe Ruth Southeast Regional Tournament in Andalusia.

It looked like almost the entire city of Valley was in town last Wednesday night for the championship game against South Carolina. Fans from Covington County were also in attendance cheering on the State Champs.

The players from Valley had a homefield advantage due to the large number of fans cheering them on and came away with a win against South Carolina to earn a berth in the 2003 Babe Ruth World Series being played in Williston, N.D.

Valley begins play at the World Series on Saturday when pool play begins. Valley will play the host team from Williston at 8 p.m.

Valley plays the Ohio Valley Regional representative at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. Monday, the team from Valley plays the Middle Atlantic rep at 8 p.m. and then plays at 11 a.m. on Tuesday against the Midwest Plains champs to wrap up pool play. Valley has Wednesday off.

Single-elimination action begins on Thursday with the third-place team from each of the two pools playing against the second-place team from the other pool. The games are set for 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The winners of those two games advance to a semi-final game on Friday against the first-place teams based on pool play. The games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The championship game is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16.
