Valley begins World Series with win

The Valley Babe Ruth baseball team, which won the 2003 Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by the City of Andalusia, earned a win in its opening game of the 2003 Babe Ruth World Series at Ardean Aafedt Stadium in Williston, N.D. on Saturday.

Valley earned a 6-3 win against the host Williston Moose Lodge team.

Valley built a 6-1 lead in the first six innings and then held on for a 6-3 win.

Valley held a 2-0 lead after two innings. Valley's big inning was the fourth when four runs scored for a 6-0 lead.

Chase Earl had a big day at the plate for Valley with two runs scored and four RBIs. He was 3-for-4 at the plate. T.J. Yates was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Yates was the winning pitcher. Patrick Lindsey got the save.

Valley did not fare as well on Sunday falling by one run to a team from Owensboro, Ky. as pool play continued.

Valley was slated to play a team from Staten Island, N.Y. Monday night. The result of the game was not available at presstime.

Valley completes pool play today with an 11 a.m. game against Shoreview, Minn.

The top three teams from each of two pools advance to single-elimination play beginning Thursday.

Semifinal games are scheduled for Friday at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The 2003 Babe Ruth World Series Championship Game is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday.
