JV football teams record wins

Straughn used a solid running game to build a lead against the Opp Bobcats in junior varsity football action Tuesday at Channell-Lee Stadium and then held on for a 14-6 win.
Straughn went on top 6-0 in the second quarter when Justin Freeney broke free and scored on an 80-yard run. The two-point attempt failed, but Straughn was on top 6-0 with 6:44 remaining in the first half.
Straughn scored again just before the halftime intermission when Freeney once again ran the ball into the end zone.
Freeney's second touchdown was a two-yard run. The scoring drive was set up by a fumble recovery at the Opp three-yard line with 1:18 left to play in the second quarter.
Jesse Brown recovered the fumble for the Tigers to give the offense excellent field position.
Freeney added a two-point conversion on a running play for a 14-0 Straughn lead with 35 seconds left in the first half.
Opp's Bobcats refused to give up and battled back in the second half.
The Bobcats scored with 1:59 left in the third quarter on a five-yard touchdown run by Reggie Jones. The two-point attempt failed, but Opp was on the scoreboard trailing Straughn 14-6.
Straughn, however, prevented Opp from scoring again to secure a 14-6 win.
Straughn's next JV football game is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16 when the Tigers host the Highland Home Flying Squadron. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
Opp's next JV game is set for Tuesday, Sept. 23 at Elba. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.
RED LEVEL
DEFEATS FLORALA
The Red Level JV Tigers opened a 20-0 lead against the Florala JV Wildcats and held on for a 20-8 win.
Ray Ray Knight scored first for the Tigers on a 25-yard touchdown run. Knight added a two-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
Shane Turner scored the second touchdown on a bootleg. He ran into the end zone from 22 yards out to give the Tigers a 14-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Knight added his second touchdown of the game on a 65-yard run.
Florala's only score came late in the game when Reggie Gundrum scored on a 20-yard touchdown run. DeAndr\u00E9 Lewis added a two-point conversion to make the score 20-8.
Red Level fullback Josh Stroud was the leading rusher for the Tigers.
The Red Level defense was paced by the play of Devin Maloy. Andy Gibson and Frank Carpenter also played well on defense, according to Coach Tim Grimes.
Red Level plays again on Tuesday, Sept. 23 against Straughn. The game is scheduled to be played in Red Level with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
Florala's next JV game is Monday, Sept. 15 against Samson. The game is slated for Matthews Stadium in Florala with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.
EAGLES SOAR PAST GAMECOCKS
Five Pleasant Home JV Eagles scored touchdowns en route to a 36-8 win against New Brockton Monday night.
Clark Sanders was the leading rusher for the Eagles and had a touchdown run in the win. Josh Douglas had two touchdowns in the win. He scored on a 40-yard run and again on a 35-yard pass play. Bob Ballard threw him the touchdown pass.
Jared Powell had a 40-yard touchdown run in the game and Dominek Sims scored on a run.
Lucas Maddox also had a touchdown run in the victory.
The JV Eagles are slated to play again on Monday, Sept. 22 against Florala. The game is scheduled to be played in Pleasant Home with kickoff at 6:30 p.m.
The JV game between the Pleasant Home Eagles and McKenzie Tigers has been cancelled.
