Florala Wildcats dominate opponents

The Florala Wildcats are off to a roaring start in basketball, with the varsity boys standing 3-0 in the young season.

Two of those wins came in the Paxton, Fla. Pre-season Tournament earlier this week, with a pair of victories over Florida teams.

Monday night, the Wildcats took on the boys from Freeport, Fla., and clawed their way to a 60-56 victory.

Freeport came out on top in the first period, taking an 18-12 lead, but the Wildcats took charge and never looked back.

At the half, the Wildcats led 33-27, and kept the momentum going into the third and fourth periods.

At the end of the third, the Cats held a slim 46-44 lead, before putting the boys from across the state line away by 4 at the end.

Several Florala, several players posted good numbers, with A.J. Thompson leading the pack with 26, Danny Wilson scoring 16, Tristan Matthews netting 8, and Cordelias Smiley sinking 5.

On Tuesday, the Wildcats simply dominated their opponents from Bozeman High School in Panama City, Fla. The Cats posted a lop-sided 73-15 victory with several players again earning high marks.

At the end of the first period, the Cats held a massive 21-5 lead, giving up only one more point to the team from the beach in the second period.

At the half, the Cats were on top with an insurmountable 40-6 lead. At the end of the third, the Cats were still dominating with a 61-13 lead. In the fourth period, the Cats held Bozeman to just two points, while tacking on 12 points of their own.

Leading players for the Cats included Vance Geddis with 15, Rick Williams with 13, Thompson with 9, Xavier Jones with 6, Matthews with 5, Cody Martin with 6, Jonathan Carnley with 6, Smiley with 5, and several other players scoring points in the Florala effort.

The Wildcats take to the hardwood again Tuesday, Dec. December 2 to take on the Brantley Bulldogs.

The Florala Lady Wildcats pulled off a big victory in the Ariton Thanksgiving Tournament this week, defeating the Zion Chapel Rebels 65-26.

For the Wildcats, Latoya Wilson had 26, Brittney Carson had 19, Liz Spurlin 6, Cynthia Campbell 4, Darlene Agege 4, Nikki Windom 3, and Allison Cobb 2.

Wilson also had 11 rebounds, with Carson taking 9 rebounds and 9 steals.

The ladies will return to the court at home on December 2, when they join the guys to take on the Bulldogs from Brantley at 4:30 p.m.
