SHS sweeps Kinston

The Straughn High School basketball teams earned wins against the visiting Kinston Bulldogs Monday.

The Straughn Lady Tigers (7-0) remained undefeated on the season with a 42-32 win. Abby Bracewell was the leading scorer for Straughn with 12 points. Danielle Beasley added 11 points. Andrea Cochran also reached double digits in scoring with 10 points.

Ashley Daniels added 6. Morgan Watson hit for 2 points. McKena Parker scored 1 point.

The win came after the Lady Tigers won the New Brockton Thanksgiving Tournament last week. The Lady Tigers began the tournament with a 48-16 win against the host Lady Gamecocks. Beasley scored 18 to lead the offense.

In the second round, Straughn topped Rehobeth 46-32. Beasley was again the leading scorer with 20 points.

The Lady Tigers defeated Opp 54-51 in the championship game. Beasley had 29 points and 15 steals to pace the Lady Tigers. Bracewell added 11 points.

Trinity Osborn paced Opp with 16 points. Ashley Mock had 12 points. Sasha Musgrove added 10.

The Straughn varsity boys' moved up to 4-3 on the season with a 60-58 win against Kinston on Monday. The victory avenges a loss to the Bulldogs at the start of the season.

Jeremy Hunt and Jared Armstrong paced the Tigers with 12 points each in the win. Garrett Windham added 11 points. Michael Hattaway had 10. Alphonso Freeney had 6 points. Sterling Driver, who left the game with an injured ankle, scored 4 points. Hunter Kinsaul hit for 3. Scotty Rabren had 2.

The Tigers entered the game against Kinston after finishing as the runner-up at the New Brockton Thanksgiving Tournament.

Straughn defeated the host Gamecocks 61-51 in the first round as Hunt scored 15 points. Windham had 11 in the victory.

In the second round, Straughn edged past Elba by a final score of 48-45. Freeney led the way with 14 points. Hunt had 10.

In the championship game, Straughn fell to G.W. Long by a final score of 52-46. Armstrong had 11 points to pace the Tigers' offense.

The Straughn B-team defeated Kinston by a final score of 45-35 on Monday to remain undefeated on the season with a 4-0 record. Jason Cotton scored 13 points for the Tigers. Andrew Huggins added 11. Marshall McGlaun scored 9 points in the win. Andrew Carter hit for 8. Justin Dortch had 4.

Straughn hosts Highland Home today and travels to Brantley on Friday.
