Fire causes slight damage

A fire occurred Wednesday evening off Hwy. 55 in the Red Oak Community, according to Dudley Maddox, a volunteer firefighter with the Red Oak Area Volunteer Fire Department.

The fire started at a residence on an unnamed dirt road off the highway, located in-between Andalusia and Florala, according to Maddox.

The fire caused minor damage, although it almost destroyed a tractor, Maddox commented.

"It was small, and actually it was in a little garage area (at the residence)," he said.

The initial part of the fire only took 20 minutes to control, but if the department hadn't arrived at the scene when they did, the tractor might have been engulfed in flames without a chance of repair, he added.

The cause of the fire was undetermined as of press time, but there were still a few "hot spots" in which other firefighters attended to after the fire was extinguished, said Maddox.
