Stewart Gordon Ashbee

Steward Gordon Ashbee, M.D., born May 17, 1951 in Mobile, where he was a lifelong resident, passed away on Sunday, December 7, 2003 at his residence.

A graduate of the Shaw High School Class of 1969, he went on to earn his B.S. degree from the University of Alabama in 1973. Dr. Ashbee attended medical school at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1977. He began his medical career as a resident of Internal Medicine at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in 1980, and was appointed Chief Resident of Internal Medicine in 1981. Dr. Ashbee practiced internal medicine with West Mobile Medical Group from 1981-2003. During his medical career, Dr. Ashbee was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, the American College of Physicians, the Medical Society of Mobile, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the American Medical Association. He served as Past President of Medical Staff, as well as Medical Director of Restorative Care at USA Knollwood Park Hospital, and was a member of the Internal Medicine Staff at both Providence Hospital and USA Knollwood park Hospital. Dr. Ashbee was a ember of Government Street Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and Elder, a Youth Sunday School teacher, and a Disciple Bible Class member and teacher.

He is survived by his wife Dr. Susan Ann Jones Ashbee, to whom he was married on may 7, 1977; his two children, Helen Ann Ashbee and William Stewart Ashbee; his parents, Dr. Eugene Erskine, and wife, Helen Ernestine Cubbage Ashbee; his brother James Erskine Ashbee, and wife Caroline Lea Gunn Ashbee, all of Mobile; mother-in-law, Thyrza A. Jones, wife of the late William C. Jones, Jr. of Andalusia; brother-in-law, William C. Jones, III and wife Rachael Fricke Jones of Montgomery; sister-in-law, Julia Jones Glass and husband, Gene L. Glass of Birmingham; Nieces, Nephews, cousins and cherished friends.

Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 with a memorial service to be held at Government Street Presbyterian Church on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at 11 a.m.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately following the service.
