The victim of a gunshot wound from an incident

that occurred Wednesday was charged with firing into an occupied building, according to Lieutenant Walt Inabinett, an investigator with the Covington County Sheriff's Department.

The shooting occurred on County Road 70, near Harmony Baptist Church. At approximately 12:15 p.m. county officials responded to the call at the residence of Roy Leon Denney, 36, and his family, where the incident occurred.

The other person involved in the shooting, Edward R. McClellan, 36, had attempted to escape from being arrested. However, the gunshot wound he reportedly received to the abdomen caused him to be taken to Andalusia Regional Hospital for treatment.

Both Denny and McClellan spent Wednesday night in the Covington County Jail, but Denny was released Thursday without charge. The shooting was allegedly because of self-defense, according to Inabinett.

McClellan is currently being held at the jail on the shooting and several other charges, added Inabinett.

"The case remains under investigation by the Covington County Sheriff's Department and the Covington County District Attorney's Office, and it will be presented at the next grand jury," Inabinett said.
