Two Dozier men who were arrested Tuesday for drugs by the 22nd Judicial Drug Task Force were also charged with child abuse by the Covington County Sheriff's Department.

David Wayne Mitchell, 41, and Jamie Jean Davis, 32, were originally arrested for trafficking, manufacturing in the first degree, and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the DTF commander.

"Agents with the DTF found Mitchell and Davis at a residence on Old Sea Right Road in the Rose Hill community," said the DTF commander. "The agents were called in reference to reported narcotic activity. Upon arrival, DTF officials made contact with the occupants."

The DTF commander added the agents smelled an odor associated with methamphetamine.

"They searched the residence and located a container of meth oil," he said. "They also found several grams of the finished meth product and all the chemicals associated with its manufacture."

The DTF commander added both suspects had over 28 grams of the drug, which constitutes the trafficking charge.

"Bond was set at $1.52 million for each of the suspects on all three charges," he said.

Kevin Lomax Lunsford, a third suspect, was also apprehended by DTF officials.

According to the commander, Lunsford pulled up to the same residence after Mitchell and Davis were arrested.

"While agents were processing the meth lab and the evidence found there, a vehicle pulled into the driveway," the commander said. "Agents made contact with the driver, and Lunsford was found to have a small glass vile containing meth residue."

Lunsford was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia and placed on a $13,000 bond. He was released from the Covington County Jail late Tuesday.

According to a release, Davis and Mitchell were also charged with child abuse Wednesday.

Stated the release, "On Dec. 30, 2003, the Covington County Sheriff's Office received information of a seven-year-old child being physically abused by his mother and live-in stepfather. Upon further investigation it was discovered the child was abused on or about December 24, 2003.

Investigators located the child on Dec. 30, 2003, six days after the abuse and observed numerous bruises. On Dec. 31, 2003, David W. Mitchell and Jamie J. Davis were charged with torture and willful abuse of a child under the age of 18. Mitchell and Davis remain in the Covington County Jail under a $1 million bond each for the abuse charges."
