Two horses valued more than $20,000 were shot and killed Tuesday on Moore Road just outside of Andalusia city limits, according to APD criminal investigator Wade Garrett.
"Two horses were shot - one died from a gunshot wound and one had to be put down," Garrett said.
The detective added the investigation is ongoing, and the department will soon get some assistance from the state.
"An investigator from (Alabama) Agriculture Department will be here tomorrow looking for clues," said Garrett.
According to Garrett, the incident occurred on a farm in between Andalusia and Carolina, and the crime is a serious offense.
"It is a Class C felony to kill livestock," he said.
Garrett added it is a serious crime to maliciously injure or shoot livestock, and the horses that were shot "were expensive and in the 5-digit figures combined."
"We're hoping to capture (the guilty party) before something similar of this nature happens again," he said.
