Opp-Samson split

The Samson Tigers marched into Opp last night with both the varsity basketball teams ranked in the top 10 in Class 2A.

The Opp Bobcats won the varsity boys' game 51-48 to improve to 11-10 on the season. The loss drops the No. 10-ranked Samson squad to 17-4 on the season.

Daniel Coleman was the leading man for Opp with 12 points, including a 4-for-4 performance at the free-throw line.

Sanches Stephens also had a big night with two critical free throws late in the game for a three-point lead. Opp was 14-of-17 as a team from the charity stripe.

Stephens ended the night with 7 points.

Tyrell Hunter also came through on offense with 10 points.

Also scoring for Opp were Rhett Barnes, Emanuel Lane, Alphonso Harris, Mariel Mount and Holt Parker.

Aaron Allen scored 10 points for the Tigers.

Samson's No. 2-ranked Lady Tigers won the varsity girls' game by a final score of 42-34.

Opp went on top early and held a 12-8 lead after one period.

Samson rallied and held a 17-16 edge at the halftime intermission.

The Lady Tigers added to the lead in the second half for a 42-34 win.

Psyche Bess paced Samson with 24 points. Sierra Wiginton added 10 points for the Lady Tigers.

Opp's leading scorer was Trinity Osborn with 16 points. Sasha Musgrove and Ashley Mock added 8 points each. Natasha Archie scored 2 points.

The loss drops the Lady Bobcats to 10-9 on the season.

Samson improves to 21-2 with the win.

Samson won the B-team game by a final score of 46-28.

Opp's points came from Bryan Tillis, Danshay Edwards, J'nico Mount, Zach Banks, Chris Dunbar, Jarad Lawrence, Albert Wilson, Torshawn Brooks and Jymarko Lacy.

The Opp teams host Elba tonight and will celebrate Senior Night with a special ceremony prior to the varsity boys' game.

The B-team game is slated to begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by the varsity girls' game and then the varsity boys' game.

In other news, the Opp Bobcats received the No. 2 seeding in the Boys' Class 4A, Area 3 Tournament via a coin toss Wednesday and will play Geneva in the first round.
