Florala upsets Brantley, 53-50

The No. 3-seeded Florala Wildcats upset the No. 2-seeded Brantley Bulldogs at the Class 1A, Area 2 Tournament yesterday with a 53-50 win on the court at J.F. Shields High School in Beatrice.
The win improves the Wildcats' record to 16-11 on the season and propels them into tonight's championship game against the winner of Friday night's late game between J.F. Shields and McKenzie.
The Wildcats will tip off action in the area tournament championship game at 7:30 p.m. at J.F. Shields High School.
The Wildcats scratched out a slim lead early against the Brantley Bulldogs on Friday. The Wildcats were on top by just one point after the first quarter by a score of 12-11.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats got going on offense with a 19-8 run.
The Wildcats entered the second half with a 31-19 lead, but almost lost it as the Bulldogs battled back.
Brantley outscored Florala 20-10 in the third period to trim the Wildcats' lead to 2 points by a score of 41-39.
The Wildcats were able to hold on for the win in the final quarter and even added one point to the lead for a 53-50 win.
Danny Wilson was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 18 points. A.J. Thompson added 10 points.
Maurice Hobdy scored 8 points. Xavier Jones hit for 7. Vance Gettis ended the night with 3 points. Corderus Smiley scored 2 points.
Devin Person was the leading scorer for Brantley with 16 points.
