Shields topples Florala

The Florala High School boys and girls basketball teams fell to J.F. Shields in area championship games Saturday in Beatrice.

The Florala boys lost by a final score of 63-40.

J.F. Shields took an 18-11 lead in the first quarter and held a 37-17 lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, J.F. Shields continued to outscore the Wildcats en route to the Class 1A, Area 2 Tournament Championship.

A.J. Thompson was the leading scorer for Florala with 16 points. Xavier Jones added 10 points. Vance Gettis scored 6 points and collected 10 rebounds. Maurice Hobdy

had 4 points. Danny Wilson had 3 points. Victor Hobdy had 1 point.

Thompson, Gettis and Wilson were named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Wildcats will play on the road in an Alabama High School Athletic Association State Playoff Game Friday. The Wildcats will play at Coffeeville (21-7) at 7 p.m.

The Florala Lady Wildcats also lost to J.F. Shields and will play a sub-regional game on the road.

The Lady Wildcats will travel to Fruitdale on Thursday for a sub-regional game. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
