Nothing is in stone yet, but Butler County could be the sight for filming of a major motion picture in the very near future.

No word yet on the movie’s title or who will star in it, but the Alabama Film Office did confirm Friday a scouting crew has been in the area recently looking for locations for an upcoming feature to be filmed somewhere in Alabama.

Tommie Fails, location coordinator for the AFO, said Friday the crew has traveled throughout Alabama and a decision may be forthcoming quickly on where the filming will take place.

&uot;I can confirm that the Alabama Film Office has been scouting the area and we hope to land a film project for the whole state of Alabama,&uot; he said.

&uot;They are looking all over the state and we have been in the Greenville area.&uot;

Fails would not give any more details and said it was an agreement with the scouting crew.

He said until they give them a 110 percent assurance they are going to film in the area, they will not release anything.

Rumors were circling throughout town Friday as who might be starring in the feature film, but those who know weren’t talking.

Several people said they knew the crew was looking for farmland where cotton would be raised later this year and that it would be used to film people picking cotton.

Mayor Dexter McLendon would not comment on whether he has met with the scouting crew, but did say he would like to see Greenville chosen in the future for a feature film.

&uot;Having a movie filmed here is a goal we have worked towards over the last few years,&uot; he said.

&uot;We have seen other cities like Eufaula and Wetumpka stand in the spotlight when they were used for filming.

To have a movie filmed here would only bolster our economy and our image.&uot;

So did the mayor confirm the area was in the running for a film location? No.

&uot;At this time it would be inappropriate for me to comment on any specifics on anything related to this,&uot; he said.

Roberta Gamble, who is very active in the Greenville Area Arts Council and who taught many students the art of drama during her tenure at Greenville High School, said the prospect of Butler County being the location for a film is great.

&uot;I think it is extremely exciting for us,&uot; she said.

&uot;I think there was a great deal of excitement generated in the area when ‘Big Fish’ was filmed in the area and that it will be a good thing if we are chosen.&uot;

Gamble said like others, she had heard several rumors but would not go into detail on them.

Tim Hattaway, who teaches at Greenville Elementary School and is a native of Greenville, said the idea of a movie being shot in the area is a good sign for the county.

He said this will give the county an opportunity to shine.

&uot;I hope that it brings continued focus on our area and that other people will see what a great a great place Butler County is and it will spawn other projects,&uot; he said.

As for Hollywood coming to Butler County, he said he is sure people will do their best to give a good impression.

&uot;I think they will find us to be hospitable as we always are when visitors come to town,&uot; he said.

&uot;When others have come here such as the students from Notre Dame and the first visitors from Korea, we have been known for our hospitality and kindness.

If Hollywood comes to town, then they’ll see that as well.&uot;
