n Special Meeting

The Butler County Commission will have a special called meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 3 at the County Commission Annex at 202 Patsaliga St. The special meeting will be held to approve and authorize the issuance of a $2.78 million aggregate principal amount of General Obligation Warrants, Series 2005, the proceeds of which will be used to finance the construction of a new jail facility within the county. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

n Bible Study

The Women's Ministry

of First Baptist Church of Greenville invites women of the community to participate in a Bible study written by Beth Moore entitled &#8220Believing God.” The 10-week study will offer three classes, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. on Tuesday mornings, or 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesday nights, or 4:30 p.m. – 6 p.m. on Sunday nights. n Kindergarten Registration

Mt. Moriah Baptist Church #2 Christian Academy is taking applications for 4-year-old children for our kindergarten program and school readiness program. Children's birthdates will have to be on or before Sept. 1. This is a free program. For more information, please call 563-7062.

n County Commission

The meeting time for the Butler County Commission's regularly scheduled second-Monday meetings has been changed from 10 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Workshops for each regularly scheduled meeting will still be held on the prior Thursday at 6 p.m.

n Optimist Essay Contest

The Butler County Optimist Club is sponsoring the Optimist International Essay Contest beginning Dec. 31. The contest is open to students under age 19. The essay winner has a chance of winning a $5,000 college scholarship. The topic is &#8220I'm unique because.” The essay contest is broken into local club, district and international. n Athletic Club Meeting

The public is invited to participate in the weekly scheduled Greenville High Athletic Club meetings at 6 p.m. each Monday in the high school cafeteria. The public is encouraged to attend and share ideas toward building a championship-level athletic department.

n 21st Century Afterschool Program

The Butler County Board of Education will be offering a 21st Century Afterschool Program for K-8th grade students Monday-Friday until 5 p.m. at W.O. Parmer, Greenville Elementary, and at the Education and Community Center for Greenville Middle School students.

Certified teachers assist with homework and offer learning activities which are fun and educational. Tuition is $25 per month. Registration forms are available at each of the sites.

n School Readiness
