LUVERNE - It was a day that Georgiana coach Donald Ray Mixon would like to forget.

The Panthers followed their 5-2 season-opening victory over Highland Home with two straight losses to Luverne in the Tigers' season opener on Thursday.

Luverne limited Georgiana (1-2) to just one hit in an 11-1 victory in five innings to open the twinbill and then followed it with an 8-4 win over the Panthers.

&#8220We committed way too many errors Thursday,” Mixon said. &#8220We have one of the youngest teams around. Six of my starters also start on the junior varsity team, so I guess you could say I'm fielding a varsity team with junior varsity players.”

Still the doubleheader sweep by Luverne did not overshadow Chris Scott's record-tying performance on Tuesday in the Panthers 5-2 victory over Highland Home.

Scott struck out 16 Flying Squadron batters, which tied a school record.

&#8220That may be the highlight of our season right there,” Mixon said.

Ronald Scott was one of five Georgiana batters to have more than one hit in the victory over Highland Home. Ronald Scott was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Gerard Lee and Chris Shows also were 2-for-3.

Kyle Nelson chipped in two hits with a RBI, and Kevin Brogden pounded out two hits.

Deymond Sankey provided the offense for Highland Home going 2-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run late in the game.

In the loss to Luverne on Thursday, the Tigers opened the game by scoring a run in the first and third innings before putting the game away with an 8-run fourth inning.

Luverne completed the sweep with an 8-4 win over the Panthers.

Donald Scott provided most of Georgiana's offense by going 3-for-4, while Ronald Scott went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Georgiana returned to action Friday to face Greenville in its season opener at Beeland Park. Results were not available by presstime.
