Greenville residents will soon have a place to shop for fresh vegetables, fruit and seafood along I-65.

The Greenville Planning Commission approved final development plans for Tomatoes, etc., a produce market and gift shop which will locate on Cahaba Rd. behind the Jameson Inn.

Owner Jerry Hawsey said Tomatoes, Etc. will sell seafood, vegetables and fruit, while also offering travelers unique gifts from an 850 square-foot upstairs gift shop.

The market itself, he said, would occupy the bottom floor, an area of 3,500 square-foot.

Hawsey, who has sold and owned interest in a mobile home dealership, said after looking at a similar style market in Millbrook, he and his wife, Holli, decided to give this unique business opportunity a try.

&#8220I was looking for something to do and after looking at the numbers we wanted to do this,” he said.

Hawsey said the market will sell produce 12 months out of the year and he's hoping to trade with farmers in and around Butler County in supplying both local shoppers and those passing through with the freshest produce around.

&#8220If they've (the farmers) got the best produce we'll work with them,” he said.

Hawsey said Construction Components is designing and building the frame for Tomatoes, Etc.

He said he hopes to start work in the site by next week and should be open for business by June. He said the market would also sell flowers, shrubs and other landscaping material for homes and business.

In other business:

n The commission approved a re-zoning request for homes located at 121 and 123 Oliver St. The homes will be re-zoned from C-2 to R-2.

n Engineer Eddie Anderson reported the Willow Point shopping center is 80 percent complete, while Savannah Ridge Apartments, located on S. Conecuh St., is 40 percent complete.

He also told members that the property owner of the large lot located beside the Wal-Mart SuperCenter has planned to attend next month's planning commission meeting to discuss sub-division of that lot.
