While still in the early stages, Robert Bishop, a developer from Andalusia confirmed Wednesday that a Holiday Inn Express will be built at the corner of Cahaba Road and Willow Lane, next to Super Wal-Mart. Bishop also said a new barbeque restaurant will also occupy property in the same development, but declined to give the name of the restaurant except to say &#8220it was a chain restaurant.”

A group of investors is developing the new hotel, which will have 64 units and be open sometime in 2008. A member of the group, who did not want to be identified, said they had just gotten franchise approval from Holiday Inn.

&#8220We're in the process of developing it and working out the details,” he said. &#8220It still hasn't been decided who will operate it, maybe a third party. It's really too early to tell a whole lot.”

Bishop said he will present a subdivision request to the Greenville Planning Commission at their next meeting.

&#8220We are basically taking care of some right of way and access issues and working with the mayor to make sure we're doing them the most efficient way for future growth,” said Bishop, who also has plans for a &#8220shadow center” that would occupy 30,000 square feet and be leased to 12 different businesses.

Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon said the development is another sign that business is good in Greenville.

&#8220We've been told on a number of occasions that the hotels are full on many weekends, so this will allow more people to stay in Greenville and enjoy what we have to offer,” he said.

McLendon said the city is analyzing what the new development will do to traffic on Cahaba Road and at the intersection of Cahaba and Fort Dale Road, which has increased dramatically since the opening of Super Wal-Mart.

&#8220We're taking a look at it, as part of our comprehensive plan, and it's possible we're going to have to work with the state to do something to keep us from having a big problem (with traffic) there.”
