While much of the summer will be spent on weight training and conditioning, Greenville Tigers' Head Coach Bryant Vincent said his bunch will get some on-the-field drills in June and July at several training camps he's signed his team up for.
The seven-on-seven camps will be held in Huntsville (June 22-24), Hoover (June 29) and Mountain Brook (date to be determined) and will pit the Tigers against some of the top teams in the state, and in the country.
“We're going to learn what it's all about at those tournaments because we'll play Hoover, who is probably going to be ranked the no. 2 team in the country in the fall.”
Vincent said there will be about 25 teams participating in the Huntsville camp and about 12 at the Hoover camp.
“These camps basically work your passing game,” Vincent said. “You put the ball on the 40-yard line and you get two first downs to score; one at the 25 and one at the 10.”
Vincent said each offense will get three plays to get a first down instead of the usual four, and that the quarterback will have only four seconds to release the ball. The first day of the Huntsville camp will be pool play to determine where teams will be seeded. After seeding is determined, then a double elimination tournament will be held with the top two teams qualifying for the state championship to be played in Troy later this year.
“The competition at these camps will be top-of-the line,” Vincent said. “It will do nothing but get us better and teach us how to compete and play the game.”
