A mother was placed under arrest after allegedly leaving her 1-year-old child locked in a car for almost 20 minutes outside Wal-Mart on June 18, according to police reports.
The report states that Tiffany R. Womack of Greenville was arrested on the scene and charged with torture or willful abuse of a child for leaving her son locked in a gray Pontiac. The windows were up and the car was not on.
Witnesses notified police, who arrived shortly before Womack exited Wal-Mart. The report said Womack told officers she “only was inside about five minutes.” After interviewing her and a pair of witnesses, officers placed Womack under arrest.
While searching Womack, officers discovered two pair of baby shoes and hair ribbons, items she admitted to stealing while in Wal-Mart, according to the report.
Greenville police notified the Department of Human Resources who took custody of the child. The child was later turned over to his grandmother.
Womack was transported to the Butler County Jail.
