A public hearing was held at 4 p.m. Monday afternoon at the Luverne City Hall in reference to a retail beer application for an on or off-premises beer license for SharpShooter, LLC, the bowling alley owned by Wesley Person.
According to Luverne Mayor Joe Rex Sport, the general consensus of the handful of people who came to the hearing was that they did not approve of it.
During the regular city council meeting, Council Member Barbara Harrison praised Person for having done a good job in running the bowling alley.
“It has a family atmosphere out there, and I think it should stay that way,” she added. “Any kind of liquor license would probably change all of that.”
Council members Charlie Johnson and Jimmy Lester agreed with Harrison's statements.
“There are several church groups and youth groups that go out there, and they might not want to go anymore,” Johnson said.
The council agreed not to take any action on the matter until they could speak with Person about it.
In other business, city engineer Morris Tate reported that there would be a water hydrant put in place to automatically water the new planters that would soon be in place as part of the downtown revitalization project.
Mayor Sport reported that the Luverne Police Department had bought two new police cars for $9,300 each. Both vehicles are 2003 Crown Victorias.
In other business, the council approved to re-appoint Tom Shows to the Luverne Industrial Development Authority, and to appoint Demetrius Carter in place of Irene Armstrong on the Luverne Housing Authority Board.
The mayor reported to the council that the Luverne Parks and Recreation Department had hosted the 9 and 10-year-old girls' softball tournament with Brantley winning the tournament.
LPR also hosted the Dixie Youth (boys 11 and 12) sub-district tournament with Luverne taking the win.
The Luverne Parks and Recreation Dixie Belles (girls, 13-15) have won the district tournament in Andalusia and are going to the state championship tournament in Eufaula on Friday, July 14.
