The Luverne Dance Center held its 2006 Summer Intensive Workshop from July 18 through July 21, according to owner Stephanie Jones.
“We try to do this every summer so the kids can get exposure to different teachers,” Jones said.
The dance students got the chance to experience several guest dance teachers, including Tiffany Wright-Swan of Dothan, who taught ballet, and Holley Richardson of Dothan, who taught tap. Instructors Kara Parker and Zana Flatt, both from the Dothan School of Dance, taught jazz classes, while Tony Hill of Montgomery taught hip-hop.
“We had one intermediate/advanced class this year,” Jones added.
With a daily schedule running from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., the dance students participated in three different classes each day.
“This is an ‘intensive' workshop,” Jones said. “It is supposed to be harder than what they are accustomed to during the year. It's supposed to be extra challenging.”
She added that the dancers were not “accustomed to dancing for five hours straight.”
“I know they learned a lot,” Jones said. “Plus, the teachers did a great job. I really feel like the students improved their skills overall.”
One thing that Jones really liked about this year's workshop was that the younger dancers got the chance to dance with the older students.
“They got in some really good practice,” she added.
This summer's participants included Megan Sport, Mary Cathryn Perdue, Austin Richburg, Rayni Holmes, Sadie Jones, Sarah Jackson, Mallie Alford, Maribeth Newton, Katie Knox, Emilee Speed, Jordan Bowers, Anna Ray Snellgrove and Kelly Cash.
