Community classes teach hobbies, life-saving

Want to learn how to make a frosting rose (almost) too pretty to eat, create a lovely floral arrangement, or develop your smocking skills?

How about learning the fundamentals of a computer or developing life-saving skills through CPR training?

All of these opportunities will be offered in September courtesy of the Butler County BOE and its Community Classes at the Butler County Education and Community Learning Center (the old high school).

&#8220We have some wonderful instructors and some great classes on tap for the community to enjoy this fall,” Amy Bryan of the BCECLC said.

Classes include Beginning Computer with Mark McClaney; Cake Decorating with Sheila Lear; CPR Certification with Ada Sue Thompson; Beginning Smocking with Mary Bertha Zorn, and Floral Design with Nancy Idland.

Dates, times and fees are as follows:

n The computer class runs for three weeks from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday nights, Sept. 12, 19 and 26. Cost is $20.

n The cake decorating class runs for four weeks from 6-8 p.m., Sept. 5, 12, 19, and 26. The $40 fee covers cost of kit and supplies.

n CPR instruction is offered from 6-8 p.m. on two consecutive nights, Sept. 18 and 19. Fee is $15.

n Beginning smocking is offered for three weeks, from 6-8 p.m. on Monday nights, Sept. 11, 18 and 25. The fee is $25 and includes supplies.

n Floral design will be offered from 6-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 18. Fee is $20 and includes supplies.

The deadline for registration for any of the classes is August 25.

&#8220Class sizes are limited and we do this on a first-come, first-serve basis, so we encourage people who are interested to sign up soon,” Bryan said.

Classes to be offered in October and November include Safety and Self-Defense for Women; Beginning Sewing; One-Stroke Painting; Holiday Home D\u00E9cor and more.

&#8220In 2007, we'll be offering classes in boating certification, income tax tips, babysitting basics and much more,” Bryan said.
