Pigskin Picks

by Irby Paul Freely

Well, last week I missed on two of the seven picks; at this rate I could work for The Advertiser. I missed on Highland Home, who lost a heart breaker in the last minute of the game, and Alabama. The Tide missed more kicks than I did games.

Anyway, we'll try it again this week.

The Squadron jumps from the frying pan into the fire as they host the Dog Town eleven. There ain't a more unfriendly town in the state if you come there to battle their Flyers. The Dogs are unbeaten and unscored on so far this year. The Flyers are as talented as the Dogs, but they lack the senior leadership the Dogs have. It will be a slobber knocker in Blue Town this weekend.

The Flyboys will score but will drop another to the Dogs. HHS-7, BHS-35.

The Cougars, off an impressive home win over Dixie, will notch another one in the win column as they drop Ashford Academy in a home game. AA-13, CCA-30.

The Luverne Tigers will play the Red Level Tigers in a nonconference game. The Tigers are back home after a two-week road trip with an &#8220Excuse me” win over Reeltown last week. The Tigers seem to be able to play when they need to, and this week will be a need to for 48 minutes. The Red Level Tigers remember that the Red Tigers knocked them out of the playoffs the last time they met in Red Level. But I don't think that will matter.

I think the home standing Tigers will be ready to play and look for another win in the search for that elusive perfect season. RLHS-13, LHS-27.

The Trojans of Troy University, off three long road games, will make a relatively short trip this week to play the University Of Alabama at Birmingham. The Blazers are coming off a loss to SEC cellar dweller Mississippi State. While the Trojans are 1 and 3 after three straight road losses to Florida St., Georgia Tech and Nebraska, the Trojans are looking to get some payback for last year and to get back into the win column. This, I think, they will do. TU- 27, UAB-13.

The Auburn Tigers will travel to South Carolina to test the Game Cocks on Thursday night of this week. The Tigers will feast on bird, bird and more bird. It will be close until the kick off. AU-35, USC-14.

The University of Alabama will travel to Gainesville to play the Florida Gators. The Gators have one thing on their mind, 31 to 3. The Tide will play valiantly but fall in the second half as the Florida depth takes over. UA-14, UF-31.

Well, that's this weeks picks, and for once I hope I miss on three of my choices. So until next week, this is Irby Paul Freely saying keep it ‘tween the ditches and plow straight.
