Luverne Tigers outlast Jaguars in 46-20 win

The Luverne Tigers jumped out to a 21 to 6 half-time lead last Friday night in Clayton, and they hung on for a 46 to 20 area win over a good Barbour County football team.

The Jaguars received the opening kick off and picked up one first down before the Tiger defense forced a punt. The Tigers took over at the Jaguar 45 yard line and wasted little time in getting into the end zone. The drive covered the 55 yards in 4 plays. Fred Hawkins accounted for the entire yardage with the TD coming on a 20 yard run. Allan Foster kicked the PAT for a 7 to nothing lead.

The Tigers took over on their 46 yard line as the first quarter ended. They needed only 6 plays to go the distance to pay dirt. The TD came on a 1 yard run by Hawkins.

Again, Foster's kick was true, and the Tigers' had a 14 point lead.

The Jaguars mounted a 75-yard drive on their next possession with the touchdown coming on a 36-yard run by a very fast tailback. The PAT failed and the Tiger lead had been cut to 14 to 6. The Tigers rounded out the scoring on the last play of the first half when Quarterback Chad free hit Hawkins with a 29-yard strike for the third Tiger touchdown. Foster again split the uprights for a 21 to 6 Tiger half-time lead.

Luverne scored two third quarter touchdowns. The first one came on a 1 yard run by QB Chad Free after a 47-yard drive.

The second TD came on a 1 yard run by Narvais Cole.

Allan Foster kicked the first PAT of the second half but missed the second. The Tiger defense held the Jags to just 10 yards of offense in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was full of excitement as both teams lit up the scoreboard several times. Barbour County scored the first touchdown brining the score to 34 -12. The Tigers got on the board next after a drive of 52 yards. The TD came on a 2 yard run by Cory Oliver. The try failed.

The Jaguars wasted no time in scoring again as they lit up the scoreboard 37 seconds after the Tigers. The TD came on a 69 yard run. The try was good and the score was Tigers 40, Jags 20. The final Tiger rally came at the end of a 50-yard drive on a 5 yard run by Oliver. The PAT failed, but the Tigers held on to a 46 to 20 win in a key area game.

The Tiger offense massed 483 yards with 75 coming through the air and 408 on the ground. The Tiger defense gave up 212 yards of offense to the Jags.

Fred Hawkins rushed for 201 yards, Narvais Cole had 84 yards and Cory Oliver accounted for 85 on the ground. Chad Free was 6 for 15 through the air for 75 yards with 1 TD and one interception. The Tigers were led on defense by Lamar Gibson and Marco Jones with 8 tackles each. Oliver had 7 stops and a sack.

Narvais Cole had 3 tackles and an interception. Jones also recorded a sack in the third quarter.

This week the Luverne Tigers host Loachapoka in a key area game. The winner is assured a home game in the first round of the playoffs.
