Riding a three-game win streak, the Georgiana Panthers ran into a roadblock Friday as the American Christian Patriots ended the Panthers' playoff run, 41-15.
“(American Christian) had a good game plan,” Georgiana head coach Donald Ray Mixon said. “But our boys played hard for the entire game.”
The Panthers scored first with a five-yard run by Cornelius McMeans that capped a 10-play drive, but that would be the only lead Georgiana would hold.
The Patriots answered the score, tying the ballgame at 7-7, and never looked back.
For the game, Georgiana finished with 217 rushing yards and 30 passing yards. The Patriots had 360 total yards of offense, most of which came through the air via quarterback Brad Smelley.
McMeans, a senior, finished the night with 80 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns, including a 43-yard sprint for a score.
Although the 2006 season is now over, 2007 starts immediately.
“We will start working for next season soon,” Mixon said. “It's the only thing we can do.”
