75 Years Ago . . . Wednesday, December 9, 1931

Mr. C. C. Daniel of Honoraville, writes in and tells us that he killed a hog on Dec. 5 which weighed in at 869 pounds.

The hog, which was &#8220some hog” was only 27 months old, and of the Duroc Jersey type.

Mr. Daniel said he made 175 pounds of sausage and 216 pounds of lard.

Privilege license schedule lists the following (among some 100 categories): The Luverne Journal, $10 annually; Funeral Homes, $20; Ice Peddlers, $50. (1931 was in the midst of the Great Depression).

Ivey Auto Company of Luverne and Hollis Motor Company of Brantley jointly sponsored a page ad proclaiming &#8220Chevrolet, The Great American Value for 1932.”

The new cars were priced from $475.

50 Years Ago . . . Wednesday, December 12, 1956

Red Keller, Roy Beall and W. I. Russell are standing behind a new tree planter donated by the Luverne Bank & Trust Co. for use by Crenshaw County farmers.

The planter will set about 7 to 8 acres of tree seedlings per day.

Sam Watson, fleet-footed halfback at Luverne High School, has been named to the first team All-State as selected by coaches and sports writers.

He also made the (Birmingham) Post Herald's Second Team, missing that paper's first team by only one vote.

Fullers Cross Roads Home Demonstration Club was named the &#8220Outstanding” HD Club of the Year.

Six of the 17 members were recognized as charter members, having joined in 1926.

168 cases of tuberculosis have been reported in Alabama during October of 1956.

Last October, the number was 253.

One of the current total lives in Crenshaw County.

25 Years Ago . . . Wednesday, December 16, 1981

Coach Glenn Daniel, head mentor of the Luverne High School Tigers, who lost in last week's game to Dadeville in the semi-finals, has been named the South Alabama Conference 2A Coach of the Year.

Luverne players also dominated the selections in the All-Conference Team.

The Luverne Slacks float entitled &#8220Santa's Helpers” won first place in the float competition Saturday morning in the annual Luverne Christmas Parade.

ABC agents poured some 20 gallons of moonshine whiskey down a Luverne drain culvert Friday afternoon.

The agents had earlier that day destroyed three stills in the northern part of the county.

Mrs. Annie Lou Perdue kicked off the sale of her book &#8220Out of the Past” when the Brantley Bank and Trust Co. sponsored an autograph party for her Saturday morning.

Kline Slaughter of Luverne recently received the &#8220Leadership Award” on Dec. 2 at special ceremonies in Montgomery.
