Luverne Lady Tigers battle Red Level tonight in Area 2 Tournament action

The Luverne Lady Tigers have had a successful season this year, according to Head Coach Kevin Hancock, and that season has led them to a top spot in Area 2 tournament action this week. The Lady Tigers continue the tournament tonight in Goshen against #3 seed Red Level. Game time is 6 p.m.
On Jan. 6, they hosted the Brantley Lady Bulldogs, winning by a score of 48-39. Leaders for the Lady Tigers were Jaleesa Franklin with 11 points, Rasheeda May and Shericka Brantley with 10 each, and Adrienne Grimes with 8 points and 13 rebounds.
On Jan. 9, the girls hosted the Georgiana Lady Panthers, squeaking by with a 41-40 victory. LHS trailed most of the game but came from behind to win on free throws. Brantley headed the scorers with 15 points, while Franklin contributed 14 points and five steals. May also added five steals to the cause.
The Lady Tigers welcomed the Flying Squadron from Highland Home on Jan. 12 in a hard fought area game. The Tigers prevailed 56-43, led by Franklin with 17 points, Heather Bagents with 10 points, and Ashley Hall with 8.
The Lady Tigers traveled to Brantley on Jan. 13, whipping the Lady Bulldogs in another close one, 44-42. Brantley hit two free throws with 11 seconds left to seal the victory. Shericka Brantley totaled 11 points, while Franklin hit 17 points, and had 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Grimes had 6 points and 13 rebounds.
On Jan. 16, the Lady Tigers wrapped up the week visiting Goshen and falling short 55-44. Brantley led the Tiger effort with 14 points, while Franklin had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Grimes added 7 points and 11 rebounds.
The Luverne Lady Tigers played their final two regular season games, first defeating Pike County, 46-40, and then dropping a loss to J.F. Shields.
Jaleesa Franklin headed the Tiger attack against Pike County on Jan. 29 with 12 points while Ashley Hall added 9, and Rasheeda May added 8. Ashley Flowers totaled 12 points to lead Pike County in the losing effort.
On Jan. 30, the Lady Tigers closed out the regular season, losing a close one to J.F.Shields, 40-34.
Franklin once again led the Tigers' cause with 12 points, while Shericka Brantley chipped in 9.
Tyika Robinson tallied 15 to head up the Shields' attack.
LHS ended the regular season with an overall 16-6 record.
The LHS Lady Tigers proudly carried a sterling 6-2 area record and a #2 seed into the Area 2 tournament this week at Goshen, Alabama.
Opening play began Monday night with #4 seed Georgiana taking on #5 seed Highland Home. Tonight, #2 seed LHS does battle with #3 seed Red Level at 6 p.m. Following at 7:30 p.m., #1 seed Goshen tackles the winner of Monday's melee between Georgiana and Highland Home.
The winner of that contest automatically moves to Saturday night's championship game against the winner of the LHS-Red Level battle. The finals will begin at 7 p.m. at Goshen High School.
