This year, the Butler County Chapter of the American Cancer Society will be “Cruisin' for a Cure” at Relay For Life.
The annual event, the ACS's signature fundraiser in the continued fight against cancer, is slated for Friday night, May 11, through Saturday morning, May 12, at the Greenville YMCA football field. Wal-Mart is returning as the event sponsor.
Local ACS Chair Joan Reynolds announced the 2007 theme at Wednesday's board meeting at the YMCA.
“We wanted something fun. Teams could either go with a cruise ship, sort of tropical theme, or, thinking back to the ‘50s, folks cruising around to the malt shop in their convertibles. I think it will give our teams more variety,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds also introduced the newest area coordinator for the ACS, Sherry Bush, who will be working with board members on the upcoming RFL, and the new assistant sponsorship chairman, Francine Wasden, who will be working with Juanita Poole this year.
Ann Steiner Gregory, 2007 team recruitment chair, encouraged anyone interested in having a team who was unable to attend Thursday night's official kickoff to contact her for a team packet.
Ethelyn Watson returns as luminaria chairman for the event.
The annual Survivors' Luncheon will be organized by Linda Holley and is tentatively slated for May 4. A firm date and place will be announced later.
There will be some changes on tap for this year's event.
“There will be no womanless beauty pageant; however, some new activities are in the planning stages. Greta Whiddon is taking charge of this for us. She is an elementary teacher with lots of energy and enthusiasm and she'll do a great job,” Reynolds said.
Roy Hale and Galahad Smith will be working on the logistics of this year's event.
“We need team captains to contact us concerning tent sizes, so we will know where to place them on the map. However, we remind everyone we do not rent or sell tents,” Hale said.
“There is info about tent rentals inside the team packets. Teams will need to contact the vendors directly.”
Two long-time ACS board members and RLF volunteers, Charles Williams and Juanita Beckler, were also honored on Wednesday for their years of work with the organization.
“They will still be helping out some part-time. They have been our wonderful Georgiana connection,” Reynolds said.
The chairman encouraged board members to contact past sponsors and help find new sponsors and teams for the annual event.
“We are looking forward to another great Relay For Life and want everyone to mark their calendars for May 11,” Reynolds said.
