Thomas is the son of Sylvester Thomas, of Highland Home, and the late Judy Thomas.

He was group managing editor for two years at The Advocate from 2003-2005, guiding the paper to a number of Alabama Press Association awards. A Troy University graduate, he launched his journalism career at The Advocate, working as a reporter in 1995-97.

From 2005 to 2007 he was South Metro bureau chief for a chain of Atlanta newspapers. He has also been the day metro editor for the Montgomery Advertiser, managing editor of the Cordele (Ga.) Dispatch, news editor of the Americus (Ga.) Times-Recorder and news editor of the Evergreen Courant.

He enjoys being involved in the community and in his spare time he enjoys spending time with his nephews and niece. He is a member of New Ebenezer Baptist Church in Highland Home.
