Saturday proved to be a fruitful day for the Florala Police Department as a routine traffic stop netted two drug arrests and more than $6,400 in cash.

Capt. Mark Anderson said Tuesday that Immanuel Jackson and Crystal Furlong were stopped by Officer Chris Neal for speeding on the streets of Florala.

“When he approached the car, he could smell the distinct smell of burnt marijuana,” Anderson said. “A search of the car uncovered several ‘dime’ bags of marijuana and $6,403 in cash.”

Anderson said the couple replied they were traveling to the beach and the money was for use on their vacation.

“There is really only one reason someone carries that much cash on their person,” he said.

“Generally, it’s to make a large ticket purchase like a vehicle or something of that nature — not for vacation.”

The two were charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and transported to the Covington County Jail.

Anderson said the department plans to pursue seizure of both the cash and the vehicle the couple was driving, as a result of the couple’s arrest.
