A Dozier man now faces an array of charges after he allegedly assaulted Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks Wednesday.

Patrick Thomas Kervin, 20, was wanted for questioning after being identified as a suspect in a felony investigation, a CCSO spokesman said.

“School Resource Officer Al Hayes was able to make contact with Kervin at his job site on Straughn School Road,” the spokesman said. “Deputy Hayes informed him he was being detained until an investigator could talk to him. Kervin pulled loose and fled through the woods between Enoch Road and Straughn School Road.”

The spokesman said deputies, as well as Meeks, responded and set up a perimeter around the area.

“Sheriff Meeks located Kervin in a field beside a home on Straughn School Road,” the spokesman said.

“When the sheriff informed Kervin he was under arrest, Kervin actively resisted and a struggle ensued before he was taken into custody by the sheriff.”

Both Meeks and Kervin suffered only minor injuries.

“Mostly just scratches — nothing which required medical attention,” the spokesman said. “Kervin was taken immediately to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, where he confessed to shattering the windows in the cab of an enclosed tractor, causing about $1,000 worth of damage.”

Kervin is charged with obstruction of governmental operations, third-degree assault, resisting arrest and second-degree criminal mischief and is being held on a $90,000 bond.

“Even though Kervin and the sheriff were involved in an altercation, the extent of the sheriff’s injuries was not significant enough to warrant felony assault on an officer,” the spokesman said.
