A hunter was found dead in a deer stand in the Conecuh National Forest Thursday.

The man, whose identity was not released, was reported to be a Jefferson County native who traveled to Covington County to hunt in the national forest.

Charles Blakely, a U.S. Forest Service supervisor, said the hunter was located on Forest Service Road 332 shortly after 1 p.m.

“They are thinking he died of a heart attack,” Blakely said. “It’s too early to know for sure, but that is all the details that I have.”

Blakely said it was unknown how long the man had been in the stand before being located.

“We do know he was hunting with a friend and it is believed that that friend found him in the stand and called 911,” he said.

No other details surrounding the incident were available as of press time.
