Organizers of the third annual Cancer Freeze raised $6,640 Saturday, proceeds they are donating to the family of 5-year-old Straughn Elementary School student Julie-Layton Bryan.

Bryant, the daughter of Brad and Stephanie Bryan of Florala, currently is undergoing treatments for retinoblastoma, a rapidly developing cancer of the retina, in her left eye.

“We had more than 40 people register to participate, sold 100 shirts and 500 bracelets, served a lot of chili and coffee,” organizer Caleb Davidson said.

Stephanie Bryan wrote on her daughter’s Caring Bridge site this weekend, “We can’t say thank you enough to Caleb, his family and all that participated. One person even commented, ‘it’s not a lot but maybe it will help.’ It is a lot and it will go as far as we can possible stretch it. It will buy several plane tickets!”

Young Julie-Layton has had four chemo treatments and will return to New York City for evaluation in March.
