Thanks to a clerk’s watchful eye Friday, an Enterprise couple is in jail — charged with stealing the clerk’s purse and its contents.

Lt. Mike Bowlan of the Andalusia Police Department said Pamela Bass, 27, and William Grantham, 20, are each charged with four counts of second-degree theft of property and one count of third-degree theft of property.

“A report was filed with the APD from a local business that indicated the two had entered the store for the purpose of conducting business,” Bowlan said. “While they were in there, one of the employees noticed that her purse had been taken. As the two left, the employee was able to get the (car) tag number and provide additional information as to the identity of the suspects.

“The reason for the number of counts each of them faces is directly related to the contents of the purse,” he said. “It was reported that inside the purse was a firearm, and according to the law and ºregardless of the value of the firearm, it constitutes theft of property II. There were also some credit cards, which is the same situation as the firearm as far as charges go.”

Bowlan said a ring valued in excess of $500 was also inside the purse, and Sgt. Tim Stallworth is currently investigating the case.

Bass and Williams were booked into the county jail under a $43,000 bond.
